maintenance and home network

I have a problem with the maintenance of my 2 pc since i networked them. I have to close all programs with ctl-alt-delete before I did Scandisk and defrag. If not, maintenance freeze or caused errors (the last one was OE fatal error in kernel386.exe by defrag and explorer). In safe mode, sometimes it is the same things !? Now that i am connect with adsl it is worse. I am discouraged...... Do you have a solution ? Tweak, windows test, i am open to everything !!!!!

My configuration
pc-1 : p3-733(133), 128 ram, W98 1st éd., AnalogX Proxy, D-link pci DFE-538TX/R 10/100 network card, Daewoo adsl modem DW-2020P
pc-2: AMD K6-2 350 (100), 128 ram, W98 1st éd., D-link pci DFE-538TX/R 10/100 network card

what programs are usually running in the background when you hit alt+control+delete?

Both pc : zonealarm (ZoneAlarm v2.6, firewall), navapw32(Norton anti-virus v 5), sctray (SecondChance v2.07), starter (??), stimon(??). On the pc connect to internet I have these : enternet and mapiicon (ADSL), proxy (AnalogX Proxy), msmsgs (MSN messenger).

I tried several times to take off "starter" and "stimon" (in msconfig), but they come back one or an other and i dont know why...
