Just downloaded this thing and I am dying to try it out cause I'm getting like 60 spams a day. If I use Hotmail, though, what would my SMTP and POP3 server addresses be? Anyone know?

Hotmail can only be retrieved through HTTP, not POP3.

The incoming http server is: services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp

I downloaded it and tried it yesterday. It is terrific! I liked it so much I made a voluntary donation to the author and got a nice anti-spam packet from him. Very powerful mail screener! I now have a "blacklist" that counts 12 and is growing. All have been bounced and no rebounds! Love it!

I think bouncing the emails has done a great job at cutting down my spam. Some must be automatically deleting my mail address from their spam list because I seem to be getting much less since I started using mailwasher 5 months ago.

Antisocial is correct, %99.9 of spam users forged thier headers. Even if the mail does get throught to spammers it just means to them that they have a live emaill addy and will spam you even more.

The one rule I tell everyone is never reply to a spammer telling them to remove your from the list, that's like saying "hello my name is stupid, my email is working please send me more spam".

I hardly ever get any spam anymore. I use NIS2002 which masks all my info. If you don't have it masked even browing a website they can sniff your email.

Nic Colt,

When an email gets bounced back to a spammer, they automatically think that they have a live email address? Explain.

I'll tell you this, ignoring spammers DOESN'T work. I've been ignoring them for years, and the spam keeps growing. Think about it, if the email doesn't get bounced, and is ignored, they think they have a live email address. Why should they remove your address, whether you respond or not? To them, the email goes through, but you're just not interested. It doesn't do them any good to remove you, it's not like you're taking up too much space in their spammer database. They'll just keep hammering away and maybe someday you'll respond.

I saw this thread a couple days ago and thought.... "Woohoo!" Anyway. I downloaded it and I love it. I'm glad I can now do something pro-active against spam. I have the spam blacklist option enabled, not sure if that means if my blocked addresses are beening uploaded or not?

A bounced email will occur when the email address is invalid. Only valid addresses will keep the message on the server until an email client downloads it.

Thanks for the great tip guys!

Bouncing works! It is effectively like changing your email address. Since I have been using this program now for two days, my Spam count per day has dropped from 65 to less than 15. Definitely worth it.

The new version also lets you create a friends list in addition to a blacklist. This is really getting close to what I want.

AOL has a lot of shortcomings (I use it for a backup when on the road) but their mail control is superb. I never get ANY spam in AOL. It is done very simply. It allows the user to specifically list those addresses that will be accepted - all else are rejected with a DAEMON back to the sender. That is when Spammers take action to drop you.

My preference would be to accept no email from anyone I do not know or authorize. I now do the same with phone calls using caller ID. If I don't see a good name and number, I do not answer the phone.

The same principle can be applied to email very easily.

>When an email gets bounced back to a spammer, they automatically think that they have a live email address? Explain.

I didn't say bounced... I meant that if you reply or send back an email saying you don't want anymore they will see that it's a live address. Even if you do have an anti spam bouncing program it hardly matters since the bounce reply will go to a dead or forged header. The spammer will never see or notice the bounced message anyway, that's not how they find your email.

The reason you get spammed in the first place is in two ways, one you enter your personal email in junk forms all over the web and in one way or another they in turn sell this info to spammers, second when you browse the web, 'refers' can look at your browsers info and see your email. So even if you have an antispam program you will still get new spam, ALWAYS because your not masking the refers.

To fight spam. You will need 3 emails, one with your ISP and 2 web emails (one private and one public).

1) when filling out ANY online form on the web always use your public web email addy.

2) mask your online identity on the web with programs like NIS2002 or firewalls.

3) never ever reply to a spammer telling them to remove you from a list. If you get something delete it.

4) keep your isp's and one web email private to only use with friends or family ect... never give that one out.

5) once a month empty your web email that is public. (the one you use for forms and online purchases, referalls ect.) this is where the spam is.

6) don't have your email on a webpage. There are programs out there that only do that, look through millions of webpages sucking valid email addy's.

7) if you use newsgroups. mask your return email like markREMOVETHIS@aol.com

Eventually you wont get spam. However if you have an email like mark@aol.com it's pointless since spamming programs will enter every possible name into a domain in order to spam. Try to use a cryptic email.

I'm having good luck with it. The bouncing is working. I've seen a real decrease in spam. I don't know how my address got out but once it does it's everywhere. This happened to me several months ago. My email address is 4 years old and it never got spammed, I was always careful. Something happened, not by my doing, and the address got onto a "list" somewhere.

I'm just glad I can now do something about it.

Doesn't a bounce always go to the reply address anyway? So who cares if the header is forged, the reply address is the one that counts. That's how they get there business.

Most of the ones I get just have a 1-800 # or have a link to a website with a messed up link so its harder to find out where its hosted. None have a real reply-to email address.

Hmmm... I don't get that type of spam. Once in a while I'll get a spam message that was cooked in a bikers toilet but usually they're just regular type stuff. Like "shop at hallmark for cards" and such.

Now the problem is that yahoo is charging for email and mailwasher won't work if you don't pay yahoo. :|

Dang I hate taking free things for granted.

By the way, there was a link posted here to the Direct Marketers Association or something like that where you could put your name on a "No Call List" so to speak. This would stop spammers who are affiliated from sending you mail and was their attempt at self regulation. HAH What a joke...my spam has doubled since I put my email on that list. Don't do it! They must be using the list FOR SPAM. Ugh...i feel like such a sucker.
