Mailto URL, Ok or not ok?

They had a contact/feedback form but then some bean counter changed the hosting service and it broke the form. That was COMPLETELY unacceptable and there was NO WAY it could ever happen again so I presented the options and they chose a simple mailto link.

It turns out the exchange address was never configured correctly (to send to a public folder) so all mails to the address resulted in a return to sender. This prompted a "meeting" and they decided that mailto addresses are COMPLETELY unacceptable and now they want a form.

I know they're high, just answer the poll.

just list the e-mail normally
make the person's name a mailto link

edit: include a form too, that way you're covering all your bases

You mean as in "mailto:i@nef" ? If so, yes, and anything that can't interpret that properly sucks.

my thoughts exactly.. I mean, I don't even KNOW what can't handle it.. whatever...

I don't think it's possible to configure exchange to properly send messages containing an @ to it's own users.
I've fvcking tried.

what about them?

I don't mind the "feedback" thing so much, of COURSE that should be a form... the problem is now they want EVERY e-mail on the site, including thier "who we are" page addresses to be a from, which is stupid.

Ah, ok, got ya. If you have decent antispam setup on your mail servers then I'd say f'em. A form for every address is dumb.

Yep, that's pretty dumb.

The solution of course is to stab them in the eye, but we're not allowed to say that.

Here's how you handle these types of issues.

1. Find out the person responsible for your problem.
2. Tell them to do their fscking job.
3. If the person from (1) is you, repeat step 2.
4. If the person from (1) is not you, repeat step 2 twice.

Honestly, everything that remotely touches the internet nowadays should understand mailto:

Anybody have ANY concrete proof that mailto is not compatible with ANTYTHING?

It's not compatible with the bean-counters. 😉

Only causes problems when there's no default email program (or you don't want to use the deault mailing program). For business computers, I can't see why this would ever be the case.

How about this...we use Groupwise at work and whenever I click a mailto link it tries to open Outlook to send the mail. If any of you know how to change this that'd be great, but this is one instance in a business environment where mailto won't work.

What browser/setup/mail client did you use to test the info@ilcomplaw.com
address that did not work.

I'm having trouble finding anything that's not mailto compatible.

-----response-----
Yahoo, msn, google, and aol mail.

Anyone care to tell me what the h3ll he means?

What he means is he used webmail to test it. In that case, he wouldn't have a mail client configured, so when the link was clicked, he'd probably get OLE wanting to be set up for mail.

Ahhhhhhhh...

So it's not that they don't work it's that the client isn't configured. I think I'm starting to get it.
