I'm wanting to run my own mail server on my domain... Does anyone know of any good freeware programs out there to do this? I'm not sure where to even start or what programs are available, but I'm off work today and I gotta learn sometime. Thanks!
I'm running 98SE now, but only because I'm only using one system for my internet functions....I'm going to be adding a second system. I'm looking for something that would be compatible with win98SE and Win2k as soon as I build my second system in 3 weeks.
Thanks. I did some searching on CNet and FINALLY found something pretty decent, The only problem is that I can't get it to work, but it's not the program that's causing problems... It's my network settings. I'm running a webserver on Win98SE now and the problem is when I try to access my domain name I never can get a response because I'm not running my own DNS server.......So......I'm going to have to come up with some way to trick my computer into allowing me to type in my domain name and actually get a response for THAT name rather than my internal ip address. I can't remember how to do this, but I know it all has to do with a small script somewhere in the network stuff. Thanks for all your help.....
In win 9x/NT/2K, you can try modifying the hosts file, mapping IP -> domain name. In 9x, it's in c:\windows. In NT/2K, it's in \%systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc.
Windows will look in the hosts file first before trying DNS (hopefully... 😉)
