Mail Server Problems

All of a sudden out of nowhere certain people get the following message when sending mail to one of my mail servers: { Diagnostic-Code: SMTP; 505 5.7.3 Client was not authenticated }There have been no changes to the mail server or DNS. Mail server is running Imail v.6.04 I have another mail server set up identically that does not have this problem. When someone sends from hotmail or some other domains that is the error. When someone sends from Bellsouth or Netscape webmail the error pops up.

Any SMTP gurus out there?

well... our mail system will deny certain things with a 505.something... basically it means you're not allowed to send through the server.

this will happen if you try to send a message through our mail servers from an IP address not in our block and are not kerberos authenticated.

most likely, something DID in fact change on the mail server. it is possible that you are sending from a blocked IP, or otherwise not logged in (maybe the isp is verifying the sender)

In this case people are not attempting to use it's smtp resources but simply send a mail to it's POP3 resources.
