ok.. I can send mail.. but why can i not recieve mail? Im using the dyndns service.. I setup the dynamic ip, and made it so bake.dyndns.com goes to 24.167.209.237 Now I can send mail to my aol account, but I can't reply from the aol account to my mail account on the server "ccrunner84@bake.dyndns.org". I have IMAP installed, and its running, when i telnet to 24.167.209.237 port 143 it responds..

Am i doing this right?

Do you get a bounce back and if so what does it say? Do you have a mx record set in your dns info?

Also do you have a firewall and are you sure your MTA is running? For your mail server to get mail the smtp port, 25, must be available. I just tried to telnet to port 25 on the IP address you listed and was unable to connect.

Since you said "i'll plug the server right into the modem" I have to ask do you have it behind a router now? I can connect to ports 110 and 143 on your server but can't connect to port 25. If its behind a router be sure you're forwarding that port.

Then you need to check your sendmail configuration maybe its only listening on 127.0.0.1 (you can verify this with netstat). Look around the DaemonPortOptions directive maybe

Actually squirrelmail's pretty sweet, maybe just play with the themes in it and find one you like. There's also alot of plugins that you can download from their site, or turn on more of the built in ones from the config script.

how hard would it be to switch over to like a real .com address? like baker.com as an example.. would I have to redo everything, or just some minor things :) And how would I register a domain? This is all in redhat 9 ofcourse :) thanks

As long as it points at your ip address, there isn't much other than telling your mail server to accept mail for that domain (don't ask me in sendmail...postfix please). To buy a domain you need to to get it from a registrar. I buy all mine through www.pairnic.com but there's a ton of them out there. I would recommend a reputable one of course though. Having a static ip is nice for this too. Be sure to keep your servers (sendmail, pop daemon, imap daemon, apache, etc) all up to date and watch for security advisories.

a really cool web based email client is at open webmail. this is a free client, but requires some configuration. if you are up to it, I would highly recommend it.
