magnetic tipped screwdrivers

ive used a relatively powerful magnetic tipped screwdriver to build, upgrade, and otherwise manage several desktops. the tip is extendable which makes it great for grabbing that one screw that falls down into the trenches of a motherboard

still, the even a relatively powerful screwdriver magnet (compared to other screwdrivers) is a relatively small magnet compared to all magnets

i was just got 512mb of crucial memory, and was reading the instructions becuz i was bored and thought i might learn something new... and it said not to use magnetic tip screwdrivers. now this is a 'duh' to keep magnets away from PCs. but ive been using my screwdriver for a long time with no problems. its probably just one of those probably-nothing-will-happen but better-safe-than-sorry things... but im wondering if any of you have any comments on using magnet screwdrivers on PCs 🙂

there was a thread about this same subject at ars technica a while back. most everyone said that it's fine to use a magnetic tipped screwdriver.

All because no damage has happened for people using mag devices it is an accident waiting to happen. My tool kit includes a screw grabber and non mag tools, even my recargeable one is non-mag. I've seen people lay them next to floppies and poof... so in my eyes it's preventive medicine 😉

I wouldn't go rubbing a magnetic screwdriver against any components. Under normal use they are fine, although I probably wouldn't around especially expensive and sensitive equipment.

I use one too and I've never had problem. The only thing is I have to keep it away from my monitor or it really messes up the image.

I wouldn't use a magentic tipped screwdriver to build/manage my computer. If you have ever taken a physics class, you will learn that when you move a wire through a magnetic field (or in this case a magnetic field moving past a wire) a current is induced. Depending on how powerful of a field that is produced by the screwdriver, there is a slight potential of damaging the delicate components. Just FYI.

I have always wondered teh same thing. I have used a magnetic tip screw driver for years though and have had no adverse affects from it.
