1) 3D MAglite + 2AA Maglite combo pack with rubber 'nonroll' endcap for minimag $19.99. They have them in colors too. Chaepest for AA minimag is 8 bucks at WalMart, 3D mag is usually 16-17 at least. Combine with the LED upgrtade for $5 at WalMart and the minimag makes for a very nice LONG lasting light.
2) Energizer 28AA + 6D battery pack was about $16.50. If you figure at least 3.75 for 6 energizer D's (they are 2.50 after rebate for 4D's at a couple place... hence 3.75) Then that's at worst <$13 for 28 energizer AA's and no rebates to deal with.
