Ok, I got the Magic Spin 8X dual format burner (DD0401) from OM during their last deal and I can't seem to burn CDR's with HD-Burn in any version of Nero. I get a "power calibration error" before the burn initiates. Although, i can burn DVD's (at 4x) and regular CDR's just fine. I have also read that you can burn TDK +R 4x media @ 8x with this burner but it also results in coasters. Which brings me to my question.

For owners of the Magic Spin, and IO Magic (not the original optorite), what firmware have y'all successfully flashed this drive with? I have heard reports of people not being able to flash with updates on assestek's and optorite's site, or that the flashes kill the drive and render it useless.

I know that 130I works with the IO/MagicSpin drive, but also heard that it takes away HD-Burn capabilities. So is firmware version 120E the solution? (on the screen to flash it to 120E it shows my current firmware 110E, and under the place for what firmware version it will flash it to, i get non comprehensible characters...it's supposed to say "flash to: 120E") Any help is appreciated! other than that, the drive is quite nice and a great deal @ $70

Just picked up one of the MagicSpin 8X drives at OM. I'll do the return/rebuy on Sunday to get the instant $50 off/$50 rebate. OM (the only "big" electronics store in my area) has had different DVD burners on sale for the past month and a half, but I knew they'd eventually have a good deal on an 8X +R/-R. Now I'm just waiting for the 939 pin A64s to be released. :)

daforce007 - It looks like the most current firmware is 1.30E.

Creig, firmware 130E will not work on IO magic / magic spin drives, the 130E is for original Optorites only. however, Accesstek has a 130I firmware, which is for OEM optorite drives, such as our IO magic / magic spin drives. BUT it will disable HD Burn according to multiple sources...

That's strange. I have three Lite-On CD-RWs, only one of which is an actual Lite-On brand name. The other two have been rebadged. I've updated the firmware on all three of them using the official Lite-On firmware and have had zero problems doing so. I find it hard to believe that they would actually change the hardware between the retail and OEM units.

Looking at the file sizes of the two firmwares show that they're completely identical at 1084.01KB each. I'm willing to bet that the only change between the Optorite and Accesstek firmware is the identification name that you see when booting.

I am not sure what firmware version I had before I updated to 130i, but I don't believe I even had HD Burn Capability before running it, and of course I definately don't have it now.

Luckily I'll never use that feature. :)

Well, i just tried to update the firmware to 120E from 110E on my MagicSpin, and it claimed it errored. But according to Nero's "choose recorder" screen, the firmware was 120E... and now HD-Burn works. so yay!

HD burn is way to burn ~1.4 GB onto a 700 MB CDR. So far, only Sanyo based (Optorite for example) drives have this feature.

I've got a $15 off $100 that Office Depot just sent me last week. Will Office Max take the coupon? If so I could get the 8X burner for $64.99. That would be reasonably hot.

coomarlin - give it a try. My OM does take other stores' coupons. Some don't. For an additional $15 off, its definitely worth a shot.

Was reading over at FW and there seems to be some conflicts as to who actually makes this drive. Some people are indicating that they are getting Optorite drives while others are saying they are getting BTC drives. Are there two seperate versions? I see that there may be differnet model numbers on boxes. One model number is (DVDRW8D) while the other adds a B to the front of the number (BDVDRW8D). Can anyone comfirm this and for those of you that have already purchased one what are your findings?

I'll probably pick one up tomorrow and use the $15 off $100 from OD coupon. I'm sure if there are two versions of the drive that the Optorite version would be better than the BTC version. There was a thread I think at CD Freaks that said a firmware update will be able to enable 8X -R burning on Optorite drives really soon. I wouldn't hold me breath, but it would be nice.

The FW thread also stated that OM managers were instructed to substiture the Pacific Digital 8X drive for the Magic Spin drive if they are OOS. The MIR would then be instant for $79.99 OTD. The Pac Dig drive is a Lite-On I believe.

I'm sure the model you got is the BTC model because their 8X drive is the "BTC DRW 1008IM". The Optorites model name is "DD0401". BTC drives are notoriously bad, but the few comments over at DVDHelp are all positive.
