I keep seeing the infomercial for Magic Jack and as it is my Landline Phone service sucks (Charter Telephone - VOIP) and Charter just raised the rates again so I was thinking of getting 2 of the Magic Jacks (One for me and one for m Mother) I want to know if anyone has one and what do they think of it? to anyone that has one or anyone who knows about it I have some questions about it
1. Does the software need to be installed?
2. Does the software have any bugs/Spyware/Adware?
3. Can I keep my existing phone number or do they give me a "New" one?
4. Is the device built OK? I mean the hardware it self not the service I have broken many of USB devices before (frankly I hate the whole USB port design). I just want to know that it will not break off if you breathe at it funny :)
5. Does it require USB 2.0 or will it work with a USB 1.1 Port?

Thanks and sorry for the long thread and many questions

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MagicJack addresses most of your questions. I passed on it when I learned that the only way to remove their software is to hack your registry. That's malware if you ask me. You should also be aware that they offer almost no support, so it may not be the best thing for your mom.

1. yes
2. some call it spyware
3. no they will give you a new number
4. It seems pretty flimsy to me
5. Not sure, but am betting it requires a usb 2.0

I have one and it works well for me. Back when I had a amd64 3000+ cpu computer it worked but if I tried to use the computer and talk on the phone at the same time the call quality drops and get choppy. Now I have a I7 920 but haven't loaded the magicjack yet on this new computer.

I don't use it as much as I thought, but when I do use it, it works well.

Here are a site for you to check out

p.s. During my quest to learn more about magicjack, I learned that many people are unhappy with it so you mileage may vary.

I looked into Magicjack, but ended up going with Ooma. Quite a bit more money up front, but much better quality calling, and no yearly fee like Magic Jack. I LOVE IT! They let me pick my number from a list, they'll port your number. Definitely something you might want to look into. Had it about a month now and am blown away at how well it works. Got mine for $209 on Newegg. As long as they stay afloat I have a phone line I'll never have to pay for.
