Leeches also have medical benefits...

like what?

Their ability to prevent blood clotting has been researched and drugs have been made from those studies that help prevent stroke and other cardiovascular conditions that involve unwanted blood clotting.

not to mention leeches will reduce blood pressure

and promote circulation

I saw this in Gladiator. Remember when the African gladiator fixed Maximus' wound in the slave caravan scene?

they only eat the dead tissue AFAIK, and cancer is normally spread all over the body, not in an open wound :p

impossible I'd wager

they feed on damaged and dead cells only. Cancer cells are healthy (as they keep reproducing) but do not fullfill the same purpose they were originally intended for

How inhumane. The maggots save her damn foot and then they reward them with murder? Wtf.

They had a show onthe Discovery channel about this. IIRC one doctor had a patient that had maggots in a wound, and she removed them. The patient died a few days later after the infected tissue started to spread. The doctor then changed her few point on how they can help in wounds.

I've known about it for years.
In "Gladiator", Crowe's buddy told him to leave the maggots on his wound alone.
They'll only eat dead stuff and promote healing.
When one of our animals gets a cut, we sometimes don't catch it for awhile.
I irrigate the wound to get the maggots out, smear neosporin on the wound liberally, and reapply for about a week.
Cell migration will close up a huge wound in a week's time when it's been cleaned by maggots and is covered with neosporin to prevent infection.
It's amazing.

That's........... nasty. First I've heard of Maggots. I know Honey has been used to clean wounds for ages.
