maggots everywhere !

No Lifer
I take the garbage can out to the curb this morning for pickup... but I had to open it up to throw a couple more items in... MAGGOTS everywhere. The stench was horrible... I think the stuff that was in there (not a lot) has been in there for 8 days (they pick up twice a week) but thanks to my laziness and yesterday being a holiday... it was just sitting in there.

I'm sure there was some meat in there ... but where do maggots come from ? How do they come into being ? I'm gonna have to spray that $#it down... but the funny thing was that after the garbagemen took the garbage, there were still maggots crawling over the inside... so I dumped them onto the asphalt of the street... ants came and got them... what an interesting sight.

you do not understand how hard it was for me to eat rice after seeing that... maybe eating those leftovers instead of going for pizza was a bad idea...

Flies lay eggs on just about anything that could possibly support life. They could have come in from any number of sources.

once at my house in college we had an end of the year bbq and then everyone left for the summer...when we came back in sept. we realized no one had taken out the trash from the bbq...the trashcan was filled with at least 5 pounds of maggots, if not more

tell me the trash was at least outside the house...

As someone above said, flies lay their eggs in rotting matter like trash, maggots hatch and start eating whatever they are on. It's mosquitoes that hatch from stagnant water pools.

Believe it or not, they currently use lab raised sterile maggots for medical reasons. They will only eat dead/diseased/dying flesh, and not healthy tissue, so they can actually speed the healing of burns and infections by devouring all the dead and dying flesh, and leaving only healthy living stuff. Lemme search for a link..

🙂

Like that scene in Gladiator, where he wakes up to find maggots burrowing into his shoulder wound, to clean it out. I would never let anyone do that to me - the image would haunt me for the rest of my life. I have nightmares about insects burrowing into my body. *shudder*

As seen on CSI: Miami.

Yup, maggots are good at getting rid of every single bit of diseased, rotting and/or infected flesh.

According to the ancient Greeks, maggots came from meat 😀

How did the fly get in there in the first place ? The lid was on tight enough that not even a flat insect could've gotten in...

Just wondering if they can be born from rotting meat...

Nope. The theory of spontaneous generation got thrown out the window a long time ago. Flies had to have gotten in somehow to lay eggs.
