Madison Square Garden People

I don't see why not - they may check bags randomly like they do at Shea Stadium. Besides, all the Ranger fans are dressed in business suits - I bet most have briefcases... they sell out from giving out tickets to businesses, not because they have real fans. 😀

cool! the jimmy v classic

the laptop shouldn't be a problem, aside from the normal risk to the laptop.

Bag Searches

Madison Square Garden asks all guests to arrive early and travel light. All persons and bags are subject to search. Bags that have passed inspection must fit comfortably under your seat. Oversized bags are prohibited. MSG does not provide an area to check bags, coats or any other personal belongings. We are not responsible for any property that is lost, stolen, or damaged.

Cameras

Video cameras, monopods, tripods, audio recording devices and cameras with telephoto or zoom lenses are not permitted inside Madison Square Garden at any time. This policy will be strictly enforced. You may bring in a disposable or 35mm camera (with no zoom or telephoto lens), however, for some events, cameras of any type and/or flash photography may be prohibited.

They will ask you to turn it on to ensure it's really a laptop. They shoot you on site if it doesn't.

Are they going to search it and all that stuff?

search it for what? plans to the death star? take a look around the court and count how many people are banging away on laptops and blackberries.

Are those rules on zoom lenses pretty common for a sports arena?

probably.

Camera Policy
Sporting Events: Non-flash, still cameras without a detachable lens, may be used to take pictures of sporting events or events where house lights are illuminated during a performance. Cameras with detachable lens are prohibited from all TD Banknorth Garden events. Any tripod or other photography equipment may not be used or placed in any area of the building without building issued media credentials.

Concerts and other Events: The Event Promoter reserves the right to deny camera use at any time during or before the concert and to prohibit the use of any camera that is deemed unacceptable. Cameras with detachable lens are prohibited at all TD Banknorth Garden concerts. The use of flash photography is also prohibited.

Interesting, I remember seeing some kid with a dslr + zoom lens at the last basketball game I went to and thought it was odd. I checked the arena's policy though and it isn't against the rules.
