MADERA!!!! First Drive: 2004 Audi S4

Looks nice and everything, but I'm a bit dissapointed that Audi seems to be moving away from forced induction in their performance lineup. For the price of this S4, just give me the B5 platform S4 and use the leftover cash to tune it!

The RS6 still has forced induction...

And the new S4 was suppose to be faster around the Nurburgring than the M3 with factory drivers.

Audi has great styling I think... but I'd still never own one. 🙂

Why not? For the price of an SUV or a fully-loaded minivan, you could easily afford a new A4.

Oh yeah, also this guy has obviously never driven a '92-'94 S4, '95-'97 S6, or a 200 Turbo Quattro. The 20 valve 5 cylinder turbocharged motor beats all.

I'm still loving the Audis, but I'm curious as to what big aesthetic differences there are to a normal A4 now? I was able to tell with the older models, but there aren't many glaring differences to me.....maybe I missed them?

Ahem. Attention please, Attention. I think we have a winner.

Yes, I would take an M3 any, and I do mean ANY, day of the week over this Audi.
First off. Two tone leather seats? Recaro or not thats just wrong!!!!
Second, the body styling does NOT do anything for me, as where the M3 is a sexy little beotch (I always have been, and always will be a sucker for BMW's bodies, my God that company rocks) with a strong jaw and some serious bite behind it.

Nice subtle touches. Looks a bit better than the boring, fugly A4.

Boring and fugly?? You've been spending too much time around Pontiacs.

I must concur with him though, Audi is starting to get a little boring there.
"Look, I'm an Audi, no, d@mn, I'm a volkswagon, wait, dammit, I'm an Audi....what the hell am I? Ohhhh thats right....B O R I N G!"

Those gay little side mouldings rock! woo hoo! just want I want for $45k, exterior modeling by playskool!
That and those seats, and the high price-tag, and thenot-so-impressive performance (yes yes 0-60 isn't everything, but I'd be willing to bet it doesn't suddenly kick in some SERIOUS improvements that are only evident during trap/track testing).
All in all, and I think most people I have talked to agree, thumbsdown....

Happy Frustration: Performance stifles the Audi critics
</a>
Just two visual ticks on these European-spec cars made us cock our heads like a dog: the protruding black rub strips running the length of the lower sill and the silvery sideview mirror housings that look a touch like those metallic shoes that only professional shoppers wear. We fussed enough about these things that you may not see them in the States when the car gets here this fall. Go, subtlety!
The silver side-view mirrors look cool. Maybe replace the rubber sills with aluminum and make them smaller.

At least the front air-dam and wheels are different than the standard A4. The A4 instills about as much emotion from me as a Buick.

And that last is the word that best describes the S4. Slightly slower and perhaps a shade less precise through hairpins than BMW's all-conquering M3, the S4 doesn't punish its occupants as much as the Munich product. Nor is its powertrain as frenetic, always egging the driver on, as if daring him (or her) to flout the speed limit. The S4 is more relaxed, falling back into its luxo-sedan mode as soon as the driver snicks the shifter into sixth (a new six-speed automatic is also now available, but was unavailable for testing).

Who wants relaxed??? BMW still wins this comparo!

People who use those things called highways.

Yeah, those two-tone seats are kind of corny looking. I hope that it's possible to delete that option, and stick with the nifty 12 way heated seats that the A4 has.
