I have finally made the switch to a notebook as my main PC.

I am tired of fooling with desktops. They are loud, ugly and take up space.

My HP NC6000 is virtually silent and takes up a tiny ammount of space.

😉

I made the same switch this summer... i didnt mean to, it just sort of happened.... but im not too upset by it. So from one switcher to another :beer:

I've done the same thing, but more because I started college, so I needed something that I could take with me from home. It is awesome to be able to take my computer anywhere and work.

I just did the same thing at work. I bought a fairly fully loaded Lenovo T60p and so far it is meeting ALL of my work needs. I got a mini docking station with it so I have a DVI output to drive a widesreen LCD. I do NOT notice a performance drop from my 3.4GHz Pentium IV desktop(actually quite an improvement!!!) Plus I can take my PC down the hall to another office and continue working during a meeting...GP

I use both a desktop and a laptop. My laptop is becoming my "school-related" stuff/work machine while my desktop is solely for entertainment/F@H/gaming (when I have time, haha)

Sure desktops aren't nearly as portable, but in my case it's reasonable and very quiet 🙂

I switched to a laptop and just ordered a new one the other day to replace the one I bought off eBay. My only problem now is to decide what to do with my desktop. 🙁

I made the switch this year also. I'm using a crappy old P4 lappie until I can get the funds togther for an HP DV6000T, fully decked out of course. I discovered that my addiction to tweaking/upgrading/gaming high end desktops was contributing to my problems with weight and a sedentary lifestyle. Also, I tended to be reclusive with regards to my family, now if I want to compute I can do it in the family room while the family watches TV.

Interesting sidenote: when I dismantled my desk and desktop computer my wife had a fit. She felt that between my radical lifestyle changes (I do triathlons and work out religiously rather than game and surf incessantly) and losing my desktop computer that I was simplifying my life so that I could easily up and leave her and the kids. I never dreamed that after hearing her complain about my computer for so many years that she'd react that way. 😕

They are also cheaper, more powerful, and easier to upgrade. As far a loud and ugly go, both of those are easy fixes. Mobility is the only reason I have a laptop.

Yeah I know, but I just don't care about "power" or "upgrading" anymore.

I have built more desktops than you can imagine. In fact I have been building desktops since 1993. I just don't care anymore really. I am getting rid of all my "computer crap" from my house.

i love my laptop, i really do. however, for a laptop to compete with my desktop would be thousands and thousands of dollars 🙁 and i do love pc gaming 🙂

so i rock both 😉 i find myself using the laptop much more frequently however.

Awesome! I made the switch about five years ago myself starting with a Dell Latitude C840 given to me by my boss. It was kinda crappy, so after a year he gave me an HP NC8000, the bigger brother to the NC6000 you have. Man I loved that machine! It was the nicest Windows machine I've ever owned (of course it cost them $4000). I'm now on a MacBook Pro (that I paid for) and I doubt I'll ever go back to owning a desktop again. I do miss the upgradeablility for playing games, but surfing the net on my recliner while watching the Panthers play football just can't be beat (except when they're winning).

i did this 5 yrs ago when i went to college, today i have my trusty 12" Powerbook G4 and a 24" Dell 2407FPW 😀.

Yeah I have a 22" Samsung and love it. 🙂

So far I can do everthing on my NC6000 that I did on my desktop. I may buy a 2.0Ghz Pentium M to replace my 1.6 for a little added umph. 😉

Yeah these are definatly nice notebooks. This is my first non-IBM in a LONG time and I am very impressed with it. My 6000 is about 2.5 years old and looks/runs like new. It has all the gadgets as well (dvd burner, blue tooth, etc) so I am set!

I was thinking in about a year upgrading to something newer but right now I can't complain.

I have the HP advanced port rep that has an extra HD in one side and a second DVD burner in the other side. No worries!

I've been a laptop guy for years - I've never really had a desktop PC of my own since my uncle gave me his old Commodore 64 when I was five.

I miss being able to play games, though, so it looks like I'll be getting a PC as soon as Kentsfield and the next-gen cards reach the mainstream (and hopefully push the 7900's and Core 2 duo's in the bargain bin.)

I've owed notebook computers as secondary machines for years... never liked to use them much but have to for occasional portability. If I'm going to be sitting at my desk at home with a big monitor plugged in along with a mouse and a full-sized keyboard, may as well have a tower or mATX/SFF box to go with it instead of a notebook. Using notebook computer keyboards and touchpads can be irritating. At this point I really can't see myself parting with either my notebook or tower, unless it were for a better one. 😉

I've never been a big PC gamer, so the switch wasn't too difficult for me. My 12" laptop is more than adequate for what I do (browsing the net, word processing, etc.), and it's handy to be able to take it from the desk to the living room, campus, or wherever.
