I usually don't include the cans. Sometimes.
Very little reason to use dried beans, except that they're cheaper. You just end up with more work and a less consistent texture than with canned. And fresh tomatoes for chile? Nah. For a Texas chile, most folks don't use more than a bit of tomato paste.
This is the burning question that must be answered.

Didn't say it was better. But it sure as fuck didn't cost $40. Basic ground beef chile with a decent amount of veggies. I really love the mushrooms instead of more meat. If you don't ... who gives a shit? Make what you like.

Also more nutritious using dried beans since there's way less sodium. They're pretty easy to cook with too.
