Madden Players, do you recommend '05 or '06??

For my wife's younger bro (13yrs). She figured Madden '06, but I thought I remember reading something about '05 being better. Or even the ESPN NFL series being better. He's getting a PS2 for xmas.

Thoughts? Opinions from peeps who have played some/all of the diff ones?
 
I've personally played both Madden '05 and ESPN 2K5 and preferred the ESPN version of the two. The unfortunate drawback is now that EA has an exclusive license to the NFL for video games you won't see anymore of the ESPN NFL series. Too bad too because it was such a great game.
 
Vote for NFL2k5, it blew Madden away in terms of gameplay and control. I mean, I considered buying either an XBOX or PS2 just to play 2k5 after I played it on a friends PS2.

But if it had to be between 05 and 06, Madden 06 just because it's newer.
 
I got a used copy of Xbox Madden 2004 off Ebay for a couple of quid a few days ago - I'd forgotten how much fun it is (the last version I played was Madden 94 or something on the Megadrive!). My thinking was to get the cheapest version I could find to get back into it again and if I like it go and get the latest version next year or something.

I dunno, I quite enjoy it. Granted I couldn't play it day in day out for weeks on end but to burn the odd 1/2 hour up its great.

Edit: I should mention I don't know what 50% of the options and plays mean..you Yanks with your crazy sports 😀
 
Ended up grabbing a used Madden '06 off eGay for $35. He's 12, and he knows about '06 coming out, so I was thinking he would probably be a little dissapointed if it was an older game.
 
Go with 06.
Basic gameplay is the same except that they did add a new wrinkle to the passing game.
They also added a little side game where you can invent a person, pick an agent, get drafted and go thru your career that way. Doesn't really interest me at all, but some might like it.

Overall, not a lot of difference, but just the fact that it has the new rookies and players that changed teams added, I think it makes it better. Which is exactly why I get the new version every year.
