Back to the topic at hand - is 30 FPS really that big a deal? Will it affect your enjoyment of the game? I don't think I'd even notice it.

Smallest install base, hardest to program for, and the most expensive to program for. Why would any dev house put much time into it if even the odds of breaking even aren't in your favor.

Why? Simply because it's a Playstation console. Look at how well the PS2 is currently selling. Considering the less-than-a-year lifespan of the PS3, it has plenty of potential to sell extremely well, just like the previous consoles.

But seriously...it's still running at 30fps. Let's cry about it.

Actually, lets blame the developers. The Ninga Gaiden Sigma developers had no problems making a 1080p/60fps game (although it does use some static lighting and such, it still looks great). From a previous article on qj.net, they basically said, "Anyone who is too lazy to properly develop for the PS3 should just leave and quit complaining about it."

Heaven forbid you play at a smooth 30fps while the 360 owners get a whole not-even-that-much-noticeably-smoother 60fps. If it's smooth, it's smooth.

And if it were the other way around?

It's likely that the PS3/360 versions of the game have framerate drops at certain points in the game, except that the PS3 will be impacted to a significantly greater degree.

Old tube TVs that only accept 480i maybe, but all the HDTVs accept 720p or 1080p, both 60fps.

1080p has three formats currently - 24, 25, and 30 frames per second. 50 and 60 fps are feasible, but not implemently with any regularity.

720p has five current formats- 24, 25, 30, 50, and 60 fps.

No, this is the third model year for DLP HDTVs to display 1080p at 60fps, and the second year for them to have 1080p 60fps inputs.

LCDs at 1080p have always been 60fps.

Toshiba's high-end HD-DVD player can output 1080p at 60 fps, as can the PS3 and the 360 Elite over HDMI, though most games are only 720p at 30 or 60.

Upscaling DVD players also started offering 1080p / 60 output last year, including my Samsung.

Unless the Maddens previous to this one bothered anyone on Xbox 360, then the answer is no.

They ran in 30fps.

Yep...although AFAIK 1080p60 isnt a broadcast standard yet.

And likely won't be for a while. Cable and Satellite companies are struggling to get enough bandwidth to handle 720p and 1080i channels.

It was noticeable for me on the last few madden games for the 360. I sold madden 06 a week after buying it, and I stopped playing madden 07 after a few months, when I usually play sports games the whole year. Not all of my issues were because of frame rate, but it definitely contributed. The game felt sluggish, and there were some instances where it was more noticeable than others, like when trying to run through a hole in the line there was often a teleportation like effect as frames dropped.

That's called a Catch-22, and it's how good systems can fail.

Perhaps another developer will step up and create a better looking NFL game on the PS3 since EA is cutting corners here? Oh wait, they have no competition. :|

Don't get hung up on rosters and team names and buy a better, unlicensed football game instead

The game isn't fun for me unless I have the real teams and players. I know that All-Pro might be a better game on the field, but franchise mode is what I play for.

 You prefer real players but franchise mode is what you play for? After the 1st year, every player drafted is a made up player. Within 10 seasons, just about all the NFL players are gone and the made-up players are the only ones left.

I'm with A5. I'm not a big sports fan anyway, but the games do lose something if it's not using the real teams. Sure, it's just the names, logos, etc... but it still affects my enjoyment.

To put it another way, what would games like Gran Turismo or Forza lose if they weren't using real cars? Imagine if they were using cars that sort of looked like real cars... meaning you could tell what car they were trying to emulate, but without using the real names. Wouldn't the games still lose something even if the physics and handling was just like that the real cars you could tell they were trying to emulate? It doesn't matter so much in a more arcade type game like Burnout, but in the more sim like games it does matter.

This is the same with sports games. It doesn't matter so much to me if real teams are used in a game like Blitz (though it still helps!), but in a sim type game it's more important.

That's my opinion anyway.

That sounds like the framerate was dropping below 30 fps, possibly way below.

If the PS3 version really is locked / steady at 30 fps you wouldn't get warping from dropped frames.

The 360 will still be smoother though, as long as the (non-locked?) 60 framerate doesn't ever drop below 30 fps.
