You're sure about that? Howlongtobeat.com claims 11hours avg for the main story
WOW, just saw a 40%off voucher from GMG for Mad Max...guess i'm grabbing that on PC right now.
Played about an hour last night. Decent game, driving is a little touchy - you know like when you want to go straight to ram something and all of a sudden a small rock takes your car off line. That's infuriating. The other thing is there's not much in the way of risk/punishment. Yes, you can die, but you just continue at the last save/checkpoint. the game saves often. And combat is a batman-clone, but dumbed down. Now, it looks like you can level up melee combat for more moves, but I haven't gotten that far yet, so no sure if move moves equals more keys to press or move is dependent on game situation. There are some other minor annoyances (like the seemingly inability to roll your car), but nothing groundbreaking.
Positives, car combat is fun with enough complexity to bring out the tension. Repairs to your car can be done on the fly (but cost nothing except time, which gets back to the risk/punishment complaint), as well as Max upgrades - no need to get to a specific garage. No bugs so far, though I've had a few graphical glitches. Atmosphere is what you would expect and story is there just itching to break out.
All in all, it's okay, decent game, where the driving obviously takes center stage. Well, at least in the beginning. It's a cross between Lara Croft and Shadows of Mordor in both style and presentation, with Batman thrown in for combat. I'll probably sink several more hours into it, but can't say for sure if I'll complete it.
Do you have to see the movie to understand the game or does the game have movie spoilers?
I haven't seen the movie yet.
Are the M&K controls ok on PC?
Or it's best with a controller...?
Controls are okay, though there are some areas in the menu where the mouse doesn't register so you have to hit a key. Annoying. You get a harpoon for your car early on. Has lots of uses, but takes a little bit to get used to the aiming, even with a M&K. Full keyboard remapping allowed, which is good because for some odd reason they decided to map the space bar with rolling and left control for jumping. I switched them. Space bar jumping just feels more natural.
Do you have to see the movie to understand the game or does the game have movie spoilers?
I haven't seen the movie yet.
.... And, additionally, it's not a "prequel" to the last movie either as Rakewell said in his reply to your question.
It's just a game set within the recognizable Mad Max setting seen in the movies.
There's a good reason why the new Mad Max game occasionally resembles this year's Mad Max: Fury Road: it's a canonical prequel that pits you against Scabrous Scrotus--son of the film's sinister Immortan Joe.
The use of the word "prequel" there is probably an oversight, especially considering it's from GameSpot. I'm saying this because every single previews and interviews of the game I've seen while it was still being demonstrated and advertised referred to it as a game that 'invokes' the movie at best, and is based on the property (setting) of the movies.
I don't have the links but just go on GameSpot, type Mad Max in their search bar, and look for previews and "let's plays" dating a couple of weeks / months back. In some of them they play the game with the devs as they described the game and they often and clearly state that the game is not, in fact, based on the movie. It's not a so-called "movie game" that normally just end up sucking really bad when directly compared to the movie it is based on. Now, I would assume that the game would be a proper prequel to the movie if at least most of the movie's important characters also play a part in the game itself. And, most importantly, if the game's events ("main" campaign) actually lead to the start of the movie. Now if that's the case then all that time spent from them saying it wasn't based on the movie would have been a blatant lie (which would highly surprise me).
EDIT: Ok found one such videos there, dating back from a stage demonstration at E3. In it, John Fuller, the game's producer, confirmed that the game is not (and was not even "originally intended" to be) a tie-in to the movie. There's 'links' to the setting of the movie at most, and that's about it. It's an original story with unique characters. It is true, however, that they did include the movie's antagonist's son in the game (and also obviously Max). It's still not a "prequel".
Having a good time with this game. Default controller mappings are a bit odd, especially if you are used to a GTA type control. Remapping helps. Only in a few hours, not done many missions yet, but I can see (hope) where this game is going and its gonna be a blast.
Has anyone had any issues with acquiring the Ripper DLC? I assume i was supposed to receive a seperate activation code for the dlc? Does anyone who didnt order directly through steam have this DLC?
