:D I just recieved mine today, it's a NEC 2500A.
I also got my rebate on the MadDog 4X DVD-R that I bought in Sept. It did take 3 months to get it though.

Two things in relationship to this deal. Firstly, i just got off the phone with online sales. They said they HAVE recieved a new shipment of these in but there is a website error that prohibits them from selling them to the public at the present. The tech checked with his supervisor and he said tomorrow between 9 am and 12 est they should have the link to the item fixed and taking orders on them again.

As a second option, I pricematched this drive with Office Max today for $20 out the door so if there are any in a store around you, you may want to try that. PM me if you need a scan of the webpage listing the price since it is currently down and ill see if i can figure out how to get it to you. Once again, this option is YMMV.

Anyone have an idea what OEM this might be, and if the firmware can be flashed?

It should be a black NEC 2500a. You can flash to dual layer if you want.

can anyone else confirm this?

Another vote for lousy Mad Dog rebates. I have a $40 rebate pending from 5 months ago. I hate Parago, they suck the big one.

Me too! For the dang Mad Dog Toshiba 4X DVD-R that was $9.99 AR at Office Max. I keep calling and they keep forwarding up to management or whatever.

MAD DOG REBATES SUCK. Period!!!

*EDIT* This thread reminded me to check on my rebate again. Here's proof on how LONG it takes:

Date Received: 11-02-2004
Check Issue Date: 02-23-2005

And yes, I know. It could have been worse!

Thanks! My order went through. I just hope it doesn't get cancelled. BTW, I have always received my MadDog rebates, albeit somewhat slowly.

Mad Dog's rebates are reliable but you have to be very patient because it will take you three to six (or more) to get them. And about this drive, majority of the user said it is a NEC 2005A, which can be upgradable to a 2510A (Dual Layer) with the correct firmware.

* This is a converted NEC 2510A firmware, patched to work on NEC 2500A drives. After updating, your drive might be capable of burning DVD+R DL (Dual Layer).

My order total is $60.30:

----------
SubTotal $49.99
Shipping $5.99
Tax $4.62
----------
Total $60.60

I just recieved an emal from Microcenter that my order has shipped this morning. Here are some comments about this drive:

They cancelled my in-store pickup order. Told me to order it online and now the link doesn't even work. :(

It's good price but a word of advice. The Mad Dog rebates are right behind the infamous Soyo rebates in the length of time to receive them. I had a 40.00 rebate on this same burner that took 5 months and repeated phone calls to receive. I also has a 17.00 rebate on one of Mad Dog's sound cards that also took 5 months to receive.

I've experienced both Soyo and Mad Dog rebates. I was leary of Mad Dog because it seems like they have a rebate on everything now, but mine came reasonably promptly and without hassle. Mad Dog is nowhere near the slowpay level of Soyo in my opinion.

As a side note, why wouldn't I want to use FedEx to ship my packages?

13 weeks and counting UP on my $30 MadDog sound card rebate :disgust:

Comp USA had posteda 550W Mad Dogg power supply for 40 bucks after mail in rebates (40 in rebates).

When i got to the register, no rebates came out. Come to find out, the rebate had expired the day before I purchased it.

Luckily I complained to the manager and he had to sell it to me at teh posted price :)

Didn't have to deal with the rebate crap!

I think stores should do away with rebates and just GIVE YOU an instant savings.........

Do you think they hold onto the rebate money in the bank for 3+ months to collect interest that will slightly offset the money they have to rebate back to us?

Glendor... Just my one.five cents

Thanks Iceboie! I'll need those links soon.

You're welcome. :)

My drive should arrive tomorrow (Track System from FedEx) but I was wondering, what is the best software to copy movies? I looked at Nero, DVD Shrink, DVDXCopy, and etc but still cannot decide which one is the best? Obviously this is my first DVD burner so I am truly clueless in this area.
