It's good price but a word of advice. The Mad Dog rebates are right behind the infamous Soyo rebates in the length of time to receive them. I had a 40.00 rebate on this same burner that took 5 months and repeated phone calls to receive. I also has a 17.00 rebate on one of Mad Dog's sound cards that also took 5 months to receive.

As a side note, why wouldn't I want to use FedEx to ship my packages?

Thanks for the rebate advice.

About the FedEx. I paid them $60 to ship some crab meat overnight to my friends in Wyoming. It took over a week for the package to arrive (obviously the meat was spoiled when it arrived), and they would not refund my money for shipping or the meat. Their customer service reps told me lie after lie about how every airport in America was closed for an entire week, the plane was grounded for technical problems, and on and on.

The next week, they were supposed to deliver a package from Newegg. They left a note at my door saying that it was at their office. So, I drove down there and waited for an hour while they searched for it. They were unable to locate it for another day.

Overall, the customer service reps were very rude, and I did not get a refund until I filed an executive complaint.

I just ordered one, I haven't had a problem with either the Mad Dog burners or with their rebates [ other then a long wait for the rebate]

This is a nice deal. MadDog rebates are slow but reliable in my experience. My most recent took 4 mos. That was a DVD burner which turned out to be a Toshiba (w/Toshiba label). Anyone know what drive is in this package?

Anyone have an idea what OEM this might be, and if the firmware can be flashed?

It should be a black NEC 2500a. You can flash to dual layer if you want.

I don't know what esquared is talking about. I've received 23/24 mad dog rebates without problems over the years. I sent in my last one in december and it's approved. I don't expect any problems with that one either.

Maybe the difference is that I don't panic after week 8. Calling when the rebate processor is just a little slow in sending out checks doesn't help. And I never had a MD rebate late by more than 4 or so weeks.

Here's what I am talking about. This is from just the current rebate thread. There's more if you go back to previous rebate threads. Your good luck with Mad Dog, that's your experience. I am just telling you mine. If you look at the rebate thread, you will find quite a few people who were also waiting 4-5 months to get their money. To me, 4 weeks overdue is no problem. The rebate form says 8 weeks to get your rebate. These were 8-12 weeks overdue.

For those sending in rebates for Maddog DVD-RW drives (rebadged NECs), check your status!
Did 3 drives for 3 x $40 = $120 worth of rebates, back 3-4 months ago... and all 3 are overdued! Called them and CSR apologized for delay, didn't know what happen

If you click on the previous rebate thread, on the third page I disscussed my problems with Mad Dog so I won't get into it here. I sent my rebate for a 15.00 5.1 sound card and a 40.00 reabte DVDRW drive on
7-13-04. I received the 40.00 around 12-10-05 and the 15.00 around 12-22-04. Five months for both.

I would take them to small claims court for the late delivery of the crab meat

I filed an executive complaint and eventually got refunded for the crab meat and the shipping. my main issue with them was their customer service reps. Once actually told me that I was stupid for shipping perishable food. funny, they have directions on how to package it and provide an overnight gurantee. by the way, their overnight gaurantee means absolutely nothing, because they can and will cancel it on a whim.

A pretty small number overall and those problems look related to OM, which is horrible about many rebates (not just Mad Dog).

But that's unlike what you originally said: "The Mad Dog rebates are right behind the infamous Soyo rebates in the length of time to receive them." SOYO doesn't pay most rebates, period. Some OM MD rebates are severely delayed. That's a huge difference.

I have filed 5 rebates with Maddog and all came in just fine. Slow, but I got them without a single need for a reminder.

Pretty small meaning what? I found four in 3 minutes. Not everyone with a Mad Dog rebate problem will post in Anandtech's rebate thread. Maybe you're in the minority, meaning you are one that's gets their Mad Dog rebate within a reasonable amount of time. You stated the problems look related to OM. I don't think so. I sent in for at least a dozen OM rebates last year and the ONLY ones I had to call and wait on was Mad Dog. OM delivered the rest of my rebates on time. Just because you have had good luck with Mad Dog, don't assume other people don't have problems.

The current rebate thread has many people squawking about Seagate rebates. I have received all of my Seagate drive rebates without a hitch, (at least 6), including my last two that just arrived. I don't deny that these people are having problems. I may have been fortunate with Seagate just as you have been fortunate with Mad Dog.

I had a MadDog rebate for a DVD-ROM. It took about 3-4 months, but it did come. However, they sent me a card saying my rebate was invalid, I called them, and without the slightest hesitation (I barely got the words 'i recieved a card saying my rebate was invalid..' out of my mouth), and an Indian guy said "that card was sent to you in error", and i recieved a $30 check (was supposed to be $20) a week later. Anyway, the way i read the situation was they would send these "invalid" cards out, and anyone who called in (within a very short time limit) about it would get their money, everyone else gets screwed. So, if you are willing to give them a call and keep close tabs on the reate, I'd say you have a good chance of getting it. Also, i had a friend buy one of these drives 6 months ago or so, and it was an NEC 2500A.

You will NEVER, EVER, EVER EVER EVER, EVER receive your rebate. I'm waiting on my mad dog dvd-rw drive rebate from november and they show no signs of ever sending it out.
