A Houston woman was indicted recently on charges of making false statements to the FBI after she told agents her husband was a terrorist who received an e-mail before the New York attacks that included macabre images of a skull, an airplane and the World Trade Center.
Authorities said Shahlah Jaffer Hussain, 39, was so furious with her husband, Fouad Esshassah, that she contacted the FBI four days after the terrorist attacks with her elaborate story.
She told FBI agents her husband received the e-mail Sept. 8, and that he often entertained guests at their Houston apartment whom she identified as terrorists wanted by the government.
Hussain also claimed her husband had a Hamas symbol tattooed on his left arm. Hamas is the largest Islamic militant group responsible for recent suicide bombings and other attacks against Israel.
FBI investigators did not find any connection between the husband and terrorists, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Hileman. Checks of the man's computer and his left arm also did not support Hussain's accusations, he said.
Hussain was indicted Jan. 2 and she faces up to five years in a federal prison and a fine up to $250,000 if convicted.
During a Dec. 19 hearing, an FBI agent said the woman was upset with her husband because he left Houston for an extended period and did not leave word of his whereabouts.
