Macs going to 1ghz?

well, it doesn't say when the 1 gig motorola cpus will be available. For all we know, it could be 2 years from now. 😛

*shrugs*

even if they get 1Ghz into there funky colours boxes they cal computers 😉 they still only have a tiny market share. The lack of software is there biggest problem.

I wish Apple would port Mac OS X over to x86 PC hardware now that would kick some major Microsoft a$$

"I wish Apple would port Mac OS X over to x86 PC hardware now that would kick some major Microsoft a$$"

that's the problem, I think MS owns at least part of Apple!

I don't understand why you guys are such pessimists.. a faster computer is better right?

or are you afraid of them actually becoming GOOD?

Apple should have just given motorola the big middle finger and gone with IBM ppc chips. At least IBM can get decent yields on 500 + MHz parts.

I guess they didn't because Moto is the only one making altivec ppc chips. but altivec is useless unless you are running a few photoshop filters or rc5

soccerman...

i don't see myself as passimistic, however having a 1ghz apple is as useful to me as a 5000Ghz super computer. 🙂

In the market place it is good as it offers somewhat more competeion thus pushing all prices down. 🙂

It would be nice to have a windows port to these chips.. all the software would need to be ported to??
There is a linux version that runs on these isnt there?

there would be ALOT of converting needed.

first off, you need it to run on AMD/Intel compatable systems, so the code for Alitvec has to be replaced..

the GUI can stay, and so can the programs, if the hardware supports what the programs do (might need some rewriting in their too?).

it would take alot of work, but it would be damn rewarding!

Soccerman,

I think your right about MS owning part of apple.

I have no problems with apple, or the mac os. i have no doubt that for certain individuals and jobs, a mac computer fits the bill. if apple could build a powerful system, at a fair price, and could offer me great support with applications and games, then i would consider buying an apple computer.

the way it stands right now, video cards (in terms of 3d gaming) is not even close to pc 3d cards. the price of apple computers still exceeds that of a pc. even though the mac has its own ports of some popular software, it still doesnt have compatability with existing pc software (again because it is not a pc) and has no compatability with pc games either.

"Wow, these puppies should crack RC5 at a rate around 8.7 Million keys/sec."

yeah that's the 1st thought that entered my mind!

wow.. how many blocks a day would that translate into?

That article doesn't say anything about 1 Ghz G4s being available. All it says is that eventually they will come. Remember the 550 Mhz G4 that was announced a month ago? We have yet to see evidence of its existance.

Here is another article which tells a more realistic story.

2800 work units!

wow.. get about 10 of these running.. you get 28000 work units a DAY

that's enough to put a team up a few notches in the dailies!
