Copy protection software developer Macrovision is set to roll out an updated version of its CDS 300 system that it claims can beat attempts to bypass Windows' auto-run feature
The upshot, says Macrovision, is that users are forced to used WMP, which invokes the installer. This time round, users are asked if they want to install a "licence" on their PC, but on goes Macrovision's Active Software Protection (ASP) code too, which actively blocks rippers and cloners.

This is BS. When I buy a CD the first thing I do is rip the cd and toss it in my closet. This just makes me want to pirate the cd because they are being asses.

If the data is on there in CD Player-readable form it can be cracked. Might be as simple as firing up CDRWin and ripping the Audio Session with error correction enabled.

Or type in "macrovision is teh r0xx00zz" to disable it, etc etc.

Interesting that they leave Mac & Linux users alone....

Interesting, seeing as how WMP has long had CD ripping capabilities built right in... Ripping CDs automatically when inserted.

Pfffft, please. Simple matter of rebooting to Linux, ripping said CD & converting to mp3. Done.
