Ive wanted a mac for quite some time now. My question is: Is it worth getting one with the architecture change right around the corner? I want to basically play around and have seen alot of those ugly blueberry ibooks for less than 200 dollars. This would basicallly be me buying a mac laptop to surf the net from my wireless router on the couch/ a cheap OSX machine for me to get familiar with the software. Any thoughts?

I'd wait a month or so for the release of the first Intel machines. Can't hurt to wait.

I own a powerbook 12" 1.5 ghz. I purchased it in june, knowing the architecture would change in a week. My computers last me around 5-6 years, and this powerbook will do that if not more. Those ugly color ibooks were g3's and are ancient, thast why they are so cheap. With that being said, i still know people who have them and use them for the recreational web surfing/ word processing/ email and do just fine. the $999 ibook is not a bad deal right now, but if you wait until 2Q of next year, u will be able to pick up G4's at a cheaper rate. You can find some great deals in AT's FS/T forum with ibooks going for around $750-800 which isnt bad at all. Go for it! The first generation of intel macs will probably be buggy anyway i would get a g4 and be happy with secure ware.
