Machine keeps turning itself off

Strange issue. Periodically, my computer will turn itself off for no apparent reason. This only happens when I'm not using it. It doesn't seem like it's crashing, because I don't get the message from Windows that it is recovering from a crash when I turn it back on. I've never actually seen it happen, so I can't be sure of what's going on. I've checked all the power settings, and it is not set to either put itself to sleep or turn off hard drives. Running Windows 7. Any ideas?

Most likely either a bad power supply, or an overheating issue with your processor. Maybe you should download an application like SpeedFan. SpeedFan can read the temps off of most motherboards/cpus nowadays. That will at least narrow it down to see if it's temperature-related or not. I know I have a temperature problem when I render 3D scenes in the 3D applications I use and it is hot in my room at the same time. Once the temp reaches a bit higher, the bios has an automatic-shutoff procedure within itself and will shut down your computer.

No, it is not a heat issue. The cpu has a good Zalman cooler and it stays nice and cool even under full load. It never even hiccups when using it for anything - gaming, video, web surfing. It only shuts itself off when idle, which is what makes it a real head scratcher for me.

RAM voltage is set according to your RAM specifications? How old is the mobo (BIOS battery)? Check the VBAT and the temps with this

Some setting in the Control panel/Power options?

RAM voltage is below spec, actually, because it is underclocked and won't run at spec speed (1066) Actually, now that I think about it, perhaps an exchange is in order, it has a lifetime warranty.

That may be a cause, I dunno, I'll try looking into that. I don't think the mobo is that old, but I suppose it is possible that the battery is not functioning properly, I'll check using that software. It is not the power option settings, I've triple checked. Thanks for the suggestions!

could be the power supply itself getting to hot or a short ..it would probably shut itself down if that were the case.

I had one like this that hicked my butt big time. found out that it was the power switch on the front of the case that was causing the problem. Changed it with the reset button for testing just had to hit the reset button to turn it on. Takes a few seconds to do and rules it out.

Might be worth checking to see if there is a new BIOS flash out for your MoBo also try turning of the power saving settings in the BIOS and Windows/Linux. Does the Event Viewer give any common event prior to each crash?
