This machine is overclocked, prime95 stable, but to settle this problem I've been running it stock and I get the same errors.
Whenever I use my modem to dialup, within 5 minutes of establishing a connection, I get a BSOD. This problem drove me insane for days. To show you that my system is very stable, to let off some steam I decided to play Half Life 2 for the first time. Offline, I got through the entire game without a hitch over a week or so. However, the second I try to use the dialup connection, bam.
This is what's weird:
1) Though it was a hardware problem. However, I changed it out with other modems that I know work, and the same thing happens exactly. All these modems, even the original, have been tested to work fine in other machines. So I tried other PCI slots, the one I know worked with my Audigy2 in it. Still the same problem. PSU/CPU instability wouldn't make sense, I can do any stress test out there fine for days. HalfLife2 is no slouch, either.
2) Software problem? Maybe. Tried the following: two different install of WinXP 32bit (two different versions lying around). Both the same thing. Tried WinXP x64, which has totally different 64-bit modem drivers, and STILL the same thing. I would even try in Linux if I thought it would help. I check the system even log for errors, and nothing. Just random dump messages that have blank spots under "Drive at fault: " or whatever.
I don't have access to broadband to test either of my gigabit ethernet adapters. From what I can tell, they work fine for just regular LAN. I don't know about using them for the net, though. Something tells me they would work fine.
So what conclusions can I come to? That my brand new motherboard isn't compatible with dialup, or just the internet? This doesn't make a lick of sense. The ONLY thing I can think of is this NV ActiveArmor crap. I refuse to install software-based firewalls since I seem to be unable to recover from them unless I reinstall windows. Do you guys know about nvAA crashing the internet for people if the program isn't installed? What should I do?
Thanks a lot,
-Kale
