Macbook Pro to iMac

I have been living out of a suitcase for the past 2 years and will finally be coming home for good next week. I've had a 15" MBP for the period of time that I've been traveling, but when I'm home on the weekends it just sits on my desk plugged into my cinema display.

I am thinking about selling my MBP and getting a new iMac. We already have an iPad and will be getting an Air for the family (my wife and I) to share when the update hits this summer. So we have some mobile devices already.

I am wondering if anyone has gone from a laptop back to a desktop and regretted it?

I do like to play computer games (at least I used to before my travels began) and I'm thinking a decked out new iMac would be pretty good for that. I also figure that since my MBP is a late-2010 model I can sell it for enough so that a 27" iMac will only cost me $500-$700 out of pocket.

Thoughts?

When I gave my MacBook to my sister I had no working laptop for a couple of months. It was rough going from having a desktop and a laptop to just having a desktop. You cannot stick your desktop in your backpack, you cannot use it while on the couch or in bed, you cannot carry it into the kitchen.

I think that most of that will be mitigated for you by having the iPad and eventually the MBA though.

The iMac is a pretty nice system, would you end up keeping the cinema display, or selling it to finance the new iMac as well?

I don't find myself surfing on my pro on the couch/bed/etc so that probably makes it easier and between an iPad and a MBA I think I'd be set.

As for the cinema display I think the wife would push for selling it but I think I can get $1400-$1500 for my Pro (sound right?) so I can probably keep the display. However I am not sure there's much benefit to two 27" displays.

The iMac is just much nicer to use. Get the 27", of course. If you have an air and an iPad, who cares?

Agreed. A buddy of mine got the 2010 version of the iMac 27" and that is very nice. I'm normally a PC person, but that iMac design (along with the glass used) was very compelling for purchase.

He ended up giving his 2009 MBP to his parents and he just uses the iMac along with an iPad for basic browsing on his couch.
