Macbook (late 2008) dual monitor resolution questions

I got a minidisplay to VGA adapter from apple, (monoprice was taking way too long to stock the cable) and I have a toslink to mini adapter for my stereo system.

Anyways, I was able to setup the audio just fine but I have some issues with the dual displays. My second display is my 42 inch LG HDTV on my wall and its highest resolution is 1024x768. So when I plug it in, OSX recognizes the monitor and changes my macbooks resolution to the grainy and huge 800x600 automatically. After some tweaking, the highest resolution I could go to is 1024x768 but even at this resolution, my macbooks screen looks 'off'. It looks just fine on my TV. I wanted to use my TV and use front row to watch my itunes movies and rentals but as far as i've been able to figure out, the only way for frontrow to display on the TV, the montiors have to be mirrored.

I was just wondering, is there any way to set it up so that I can set the resolutions of the two displays independent of one another yet still mirror each other? So i can have my tv at 1024x768 and my macbook display at its native resolution?

My only solution now is to unplug the tv cable from the minidisplay port when i'm using the computer and plug it in when i'm using frontrow. It works in the sense that osx auto adjusts according to the adapter but it's an imperfect solution at best. Any ideas?

Mirroring would require the same resolution (I think), but they shouldn't have to be mirrored, its just that Front Row can only use the primary display. Just go into Display and drag the Menu Bar from the macbook to the TV display, then when you plug in the TV it becomes primary and Front Row should work fine.

Mirroring does require the same resolution, so what Aphex suggested, putting the Menubar on the TV when you have the TV connected is probably the best bet.

I didn't know you can drag the menu bar to the other monitor under arrangement, thanks for the tips!

Yea, it took me forever to learn that one. But I seldom dual monitor it up... so it makes sense that it would take me a while.

I have dual monitors at 1920x1200 and 1280x800 they can both be set independently, but only if you are not using mirroring.
