That's when PC laptops went to trash. I bought my Dell 600m for college and my buddy bought an 8600 before we went to college. I had 1400x1050 and he had 1680x1050. This was 2004 or whatever. Then the HD revolution kicked in and it became cool to market 720p HD. If anything PC laptops went down the drain during that era, and have barely recovered. Only because we have 1080p now that they're on to marketing 1080p, but in the end we had those resolutions back in the day.

I don't think the MB was ever solid at 1280x800. It was just "passable."

Don't forget the other annoyance of the HD 'revolution' - 16:9 displays on laptops. Ugh. 16:10 is so much better for actually doing stuff on the laptop.

------

I went to a couple shops and compared the non-retina MBP 13" to the 13" Macbook Air, and the quality of non-retina MBP's screen actually does look nicer, even despite the lower resolution.

And then of course the rMBP's display is just gorgeous.

I looked at them side by side at Best Buy today. Horizontal viewing angles were the same, but vertical was better on teh cPro. But, thankfully, since the device has a hinge in it, you can adjust the vertical.
Which is really, really annoying. Shift your position just a bit, and all of a sudden the image goes to crap, forcing you to readjust the screen or shift your position back. This is not a problem on the Pros.

Actually, depending upon what I'm doing, I may even prefer 4:3. However, 16:10 is a good compromise.

Too many people seem to get hung up on resolution. It's the same way with point-and-shoot cameras.

Yes, yes it is. :)

I wouldn't ever consider a non-retina laptop after having the 15" rPro. Every display I look at, frankly, looks appalling. I don't think it's a case of getting hung up, it's a case of seeing the light, in a beautifully un pixelated form.

It's not a problem on my Air either. The image doesn't suddenly go to crap if i shift my position a fraction of an inch. It goes to crap if I stand up and look down on the laptop, or if I am sitting on the ground and it's up on a coffee table or something. Have you used an Air for an extended period of time? I'm not saying that the Air's display is god's gift to computing, but it's also not trash compared to the cPro.

I mean, we get it, you like the cPro's screen better. I think you're wrong, you think I'm wrong.

I get really frustrated with the air after about 20 minutes of usage.

The one machine I got frustrated even faster was a 12" Windows laptop with a reduced size keyboard.

EDIT:

Scratch that. Maybe after 20 mins I'm getting annoyed. I get truly frustrated after an hour or so. However, there are a couple of reasons, including the bad viewing angles and the resolution being "off" - too high (or too low, depending on the perspective).

Note that this is on older model Airs. (I haven't used the 2013 extensively.)

The Air's display is simply not up to par compared to the ultrabook competition out there with Haswell. I honestly could not live with it, despite the impressive battery life.
