Ok, My Friend just told me that th Mac G5 or whatever it is, is the fastest Desktop COmp as of now. Now the way I responded was no way since I am a PC user. I could not understand how Mac could even touch PC. I thought that mac was just a watered down version of a PC since everything that was compatible with mac said SPECIAL MAC EDITION, it's like a mac is a retarted kid in a class that needs special things. Can someone tell me why should I consider mac as a well worth desktop machine to use, or can someone tell my friend to shutup and he doesn't knw what he is talking about so I can go hah hah I told you so? Please help me out he's really getting on my nerves.

This is really some flame bait.. also, you should look for other ways to start discussions

Either way, the way I look at it is, that there is a place for everything. If I had the money a MAC would be right now my main computer, with a PC for gaming, and a NIX variant for a server if not a Windows server.

Trying not make it flame-inducing....

Actually the new dual G5 Mac seems to be an extremely fast machine. It is competitive with a dual Xeon 3.06 GHz and usually cheaper, if spec'd the same way.

The new dual G5 Mac has the fastest front side bus (2x1 GHz) for a home desktop, and has the same memory bus speed as the P4 (800 MHz), which is faster than the Xeon (533 MHz).

If you want a high end machine, the dual G5 Mac would serve you well. The OS is very nice too (Mac OS X). But then again, a fast HyperThreaded P4 or a dual Xeon would also serve you well, too.

macs were the first good computers until bill gates stole it. but what i like about macs is that it has a SWEET OS that windows can never match. other than that it is just a overpriced junk that slows down fast.

Its Impossible to tell 100% which one is faster. There both built on a different system. Right now Apple has finally caught up with PC interms of Processing power. Now its just a matter of where you feel more comfortable running your software.

The anon postings from the Mac geeks are great :p

Taking personal offense at a PCB and some silicon is sad, and kinda funny.

Sorry, I've been saving this for a special occasion.;) On a serious note, Eug and AnImuS are correct. The Mac is an entirely different platform, so it's far from a watered down PC. It only seems like the "retarded kid" because it has the smaller market share, so it's always compared to Windows PCs.

So, what you are saying, is you want to start bashing a product you've never used and, admitedly, know absolutely nothing about? Am I correct here? 'Cause if I'm gonna laugh at you I'd like to make sure I'm doing it for the right reasons. ;)

There are already a bunch of threads about the new G5 you can check out so i only give a brief explanation. Basically, the G5 is a total redesign of apples Powermac. it features (at the top end), Dual 2Ghz PPC 970s 64bit from IBM. It is Mighty fast. Apple released benchmarks for it beating the pc and and people claimed they were false tests because of the compiler used and some tweaking done to the machine, etc. Then apple explained the tests some more and i think set almost everything strait. Bu these are just benchmarks, and we will have to wait until these machines get into the real people's hands to see how fast they really are.

Now, about why someone should consider a mac and the stuf about the retarded kid. The "special" mac hardware has to do with the mac being totally different hardware/software config versus a pc. Things developed for the PC might not work with the mac like graphics cards. Things like USB cards, firewire cards, cheap CD-RWs, etc should all work fine. I own both a PowerMac and Athlon XP system. Personally i think you should ould only consider a mac if you are unhappy with windows. I do think you should atleast try mac os x(make sure its X). If you are comfortable using windows and don't like mac os X, then keep using windows. Personally, i try not to use windows when i don't have to. I don't like the way windows is put together. But its all up to what you want to do and what you like using being they both have their strengths and weaknesses.

You shouldn't dismiss your friend and tell him he is wrong just yet, because no one really knows how fast they are.

i have a pretty rad PC by most standards (the one in my sig), and i have used it for nothing but games since i got my powerbook. actually, since i mostly play WC3, Quake3, UT, and Diablo2 at lan parties, i haven't really even used it for that. OS X is phenomenal. even with the relatively porky G4, i would much rather use my Mac than my PC.

Agreed.

That G5 would certainly outperform any PC in a standardized benchmark but I still wouldn't buy it. 1) It can't run the applications I need my computer to run (most things don't have Mac ports). 2) I'd rather use a dual boot Linux/XP than MacOS X.

The problem is that macs still cost a crapload. for most people (like me) a $300-500 cheque for an Athlon XP 2400+, RAM, mobo and a good vid card is a much better deal. its just not "worth it". no matter how superior, if its too expensive, its too expensive.

Addon: Those anon mac users are hilarious.

The way I see it is if you have the money but arent a gamer go mac. If you're looking to apply blazing fast processors to games go Intel or AMD XP systems. Its just that simple. Who really cares if the benchmarks on a G5 blow XP procs outta the water all its goign to be used for is boring OFFICE XP stuff and emailing and what not (and maybe servering?).

Well, I wouldn't be buying a 3 GHz P4 or a dual 2 GHz G5 to be running Office. I'd get a Celeron or eMac for that.

As for games, the PCs still have the edge because of what's available, but it seems the new G5 with 9800 Pro has gone a long way to equalize performance. (People are getting 375 fps with timedemo1 at 1024x768x32 at max settings).

WTF....does everyone just assume that there is no games for macs out there? Go to CompUSSR or an Apple store. there is games out there for macs. True, not all that is available for PC(Windows), But some good ones.

You really need to do a little research before posting a flame-initiating thread like this. The new G5's have come a long way.

Could you imagine the looks you would get showing up at a lan party with a new G5 complete with blue cold cathode emiting light through the front and back mesh? :p
