As for comparing the Dell workstation with the fastest Mac on the market, well, the two machines are apparently in different classes. Take a look at the test results, and you?ll have to agree that, using these benchmarks, the Mac was slaughtered again, and this time by an even wider expanse than ever. We were surprised at the huge margin of the defeat of the Mac in these tests. Even though the Mac's dual G4 chips have been sped up to 1.25 GHz and offers faster DDR RAM, apparently this wasn?t enough to keep up with the newest and fastest from Dell and Intel. The most amazing part of this is that this Dell PC cost $629 less than the Mac we tested.

they talk about photoshop in the article too.

Big whoop.

It seems to me that, according to most PC users:

1. All Macs are good for is video editing and Photoshop
2. Anytime someone points out that a PC can do either one of the aforementioned taks faster, it proves PCs are better than Macs.

I am not a Mac zealot (I have one Mac and 5 PCs), but I do see their value.

Guys, these days, with the deals you can find in Hot deals on dells...

price to performance ratio, DELL SMACKS ALL.

The days when AMD reigned as King of PC value systems is over, at least for the past few months and the next few months to come.

I can't even begin to build an AMD system for that cheap. I've purchased several dells for 378 out the door. considering on site labor and warranty, it just is'nt worth it. call me a sellout to computer enthusiasts, but i dont' care for building one when i can get it cheaper, and its faster.

btw, I'm pro AMD usually, i have an amd box that is my primary box, but right now, the dell deals are insane. My next primary box may very well be an Intel-Dell.

edit: kinda ranting here, but its pent up from the AMD XPP. All that brown nosing, anti - intel chanting, got to me. i was pissed off. I'm not pro intel, but this biasesness, blatant brownosing psychophants. to me a real computer enthusiast does'nt discriminate.

what value, pcs can do anything you'd want to do on a mac, 10 times faster and 1/4 of the cost, i see no value in that, unless you think its a status symbol to own one

Wow, you suck at reading, don't you? The article said almost twice as fast, at 5/6 the cost.

You can post again once you have Xfree86 compiled and running on your PC.

You know what..probably 95% of the total population of computer users don't give a damn about Xfree86

I beleive he said:
pcs can do anything you'd want to do on a mac

Note that he didn't say "pcs can do anything that most people want to do on a mac", he said "you", refferring to the people reading this thread. That includes me. And I want to install Xfree86.

Nevermind, I googled it...

What is XFree86?
The XFree86 Project, Inc is the organisation which produces XFree86 , a freely redistributable open-source implementation of the X Window System which runs on UNIX(R) and UNIX-like operating systems such as Linux, all of the BSD variants, Sun Solaris x86, Mac OS X (via Darwin), as well as other platforms like OS/2 and Cygwin.

XFree86, the product, provides a client/server interface between display hardware (the mouse, keyboard, and video displays) and the desktop environment while also providing both the windowing infrastructure and a standardized application interface (API). XFree86 is platform-independent, network-transparent and extensible.

With XFree86 a user cannot only choose the desktop environment they prefer, but because we are an open-source project, users can also modify and update their systems as they see best. As XFree86 has always been an unabashed supporter of freedom of the user desktop, so we encourage users to customise and personalise their desktops with the application of their choice, whether it be KDE, GNOME, Enlightenment, Blackbox, AfterStep, fvwm or twm.

Our goal at XFree86 is to have X run on every platform available, including those we do not currently support, as the best windowing system available on that platform.

I like macs for their simplicity. You could call it form over function in that you don't have all this crap spread out over your HD (why can't I simply delete a folder to remove an app? <--rhetorical question. Please don't answer) and in your apps (The Aqua interface is SO clean and streamlined). I don't have time at work to fvck around with my computer like I do at home (I run a PC at home). It's just less hassle for me to run on a mac at work.
