This place is famous for the "Apple is just an empty brand name, I can get XYZ for cheaper" argument, but so many people in the For Sale forum are pathologically sensitive about cosmetic blemishes in their electronics.

Why do you care if your computer has a scratch or dent in it as long as it works?

I like scratches and dents on everything. It lowers the cost without decreasing the value. I wouldn't use an Idevice if you gave it to me. I'd consider a Mac If I changed the O/S, and my use didn't put money in Apple's pocket.

I vote with my wallet. It's the only real vote you get anywhere. I don't believe in Apple, and I don't support Apple. I'd use an abacus before I gave Apple money to do my computing.

You are confusing economics with OCD.
 
For me it comes down to functionality.
Apple computing is more expensive, but a solid worthwhile investment.
I've had my 2010 iMac since 2010, and I will often price a newer system just for the fun of it. But in reality there is nothing at all wrong with my current 2010 system.
I've done two surgeries on my iMac.
I added a 256 GB SSD drive, and later upgraded to a 3TB internal drive.

What I love is everything just works.
iMovie is great for basic video editing. OS updates are either free or never more than $30.
And if you have other Apple stuff like phones and tablets, integration can not be beat.

I refuse to work on Windows based PC's anymore.
And I sure do not miss the constant headaches and irritations with using Windows based programs.
Frankly, I can't remember the last time I had any technical issue with my iMac.
Everything just works!
 
if i wasn't doing iOS development in my spare time, i don't think i ever would have gotten into OSX. but i did 6 years ago and i'm on my 2nd hackintosh right now. i just couldn't justify the $1100 difference to get a mac "equivalent" of the HP laptop i got and put osx on.

i put "equivalent" in quotes because it's really not as powerful or nice as the macbook would be if i got one, but it was a shitload cheaper.

my next computer will definitely be a macbook though. i'm at the point where i never use my desktop for anything really anymore (which still runs windows), and there came a time where my old hackintosh hardware wise simply could not run the latest version of OSX, which was required to run the latest version of Xcode, which was required to develop for the latest iOS, which was required to submit apps to the app store.

so next time i get into that pickle, i'm just going to splurge on a macbook. while the hackintosh doesn't give me many issues, upgrading to the latest OSX can be scary and a pain in the ass if things don't work.
 
After using OSX for a while, it was its weird quirks, but man, terminal is freaking amazing. Powershell is attempting to get there, but otherwise, terminal shuts down Windows for anything that isn't gaming related.

i think most of the hate (as far as the operating system goes, not the price of hardware) is simply because people used to windows are used to doing everything a specific way, and it's just different. and people cry when things are different.

Using a hackint0sh with both windows 10 and osx Yosemite makes me wish I could afford a real mac. Too bad I have to use windows programs, still buggy with random crashes/malware/viruses. osx on the hand like mentioned just works. :\
 
Macs/iOS are counter intuitive to me and seemed really...limited? Sure they have their uses but I'll leave that to someone who has the patience to deal with that crap.

I've been using IBM compats and Windows PCs as long as I remember and will continue to do so as long as I can.
 
If I wasn't a PC gamer, I probably would have gotten an iMac or Mac Mini years ago and called it a day.

While I like Windows 7 just fine, I really don't like the direction Microsoft has been heading in recent years. Especially with this new freemium style business model they've put out for Windows 10. It's one thing to pull those shenanigans on a "free" upgrade, but another when you're paying $100+ to buy an OEM license. Guess they learned nothing from the Xbone fiasco.

That said, I have also been critical over Apple's recent hardware choices. Non-upgradable systems, non-replaceable batteries in the laptops, that stupid Retina MacBook with the single USB port. I expect better from a premium product.

OS X is BSD with a spit polish, with a couple proprietary APIs slapped on top for good measure. So it has the same underlying power of all Unix-based operating systems. Even shares a lot of the same terminal commands as Linux. You can really get in there and dig around if you know what you're doing.
 
I always thought the cosmetic thing is a way for the seller to try to get more for their item if there are no blemishes, or alternatively a way for the buyer to pay less for it if there are blemishes. Nobody really cares about it beyond it's effect on their personal bottom line.

As for the overall mac vs. PC debate, I don't give shit one about that. I like to game, and I like to build my own computers to my specifications. That means I use PCs. It doesn't mean that I think macs are no good, they just can't fill my needs.

The flip side of that for me is cell phones. I don't want to dick around with my phone. I don't care to personalize it, and I never ask it to do anything highly technical or outside of "typical" phone usage. What I DO want from it is a painless and smooth experience that involves as few glitches and problems as possible without me having to do shit to it to get it there. That means I use an iphone.
 
I try to avoid scratches and dents, and if I'm buying something scratched and dented it better be at a discount. But I'm not throwing away my new Thinkpad just because the airport chair scratched the cover.

as a computer savy person, i agree with you. but at initial look, it "feels" a lot different. hell even the buttons on the windows are in total opposite corners, and the green button doesn't work exactly like the maximize button does on windows.
 
There are so many more troubleshooting tools and information for Windows and even Linux than Macs. I prefer to work on machines myself but when a Mac can't boot, it's usually a trip to a "Genius" and a charge that costs more than a lowend laptop is worth.

As for superficial issues, half the crap I buy is refurb so I don't care.
