Mac OS 9 isn't all that bad, but keep in mind that it's not supported by most software developers and hardware manufacturers anymore.

OS X is generally considered to be more stable and prettier, too.

Here are data sheets for those interested: Text 1 and Text 2.

These iMacs are ready for browsing the web, edu games and dvds (well, those with DVD drive...).

There aren't that many choices in the browser department of OS 9. Mozilla 1.2 is maybe the closest thing to a modern web browser there. I've seen quite many (German) edu games for OS 9. I like OS 9 but it's a matter of taste. Also, it's true that OS X is more stable, now.

If you decide to install OS X, go for 10.3 or 10.4. 10.2 is relatively ressource hungry and 10.0/10.1 were immature versions. I recommend 256 MB of RAM.

I don't think you can run OS X on it. So, no.

my dad runs OSX on his G3 350mhz

from the research I've done so far, it seems like a lot of people like to put 10.3 on their G3 imacs.

I wonder if I'd be happy with the OS 9 that's already installed, then it's just a matter of another stick of mem

If you aren't familiar with OS9, it's going to be a pain in the ass for you. I suggest you upgrade to OS X. It will be easier on you.

What is bad about OS 9?

Stability is a huge issue. Running OS 9 on an old Powermac 9600 was hell. Everytime Internet explorer crashed, the only way to shut down the computer was pulling the plug. Even with the high memory allocation. Any quicktime movie crashed the computer. Allocating more memory did absolutely nothing.

I was also running OS 9 on an old Powermac G4 I have. It was much more stable, but of course, it crashed from time to time.

I may have just found a deal on an imac g3 500mhz w/ 640mb memory and OS 10.3 for $75....looks like it should be perfect, thanks guys

OS X will run on it, but anything over version 10.2 will be sluggish at best.

Not really. Ive found that the newer versions (well..10.3.9) actually run better on my dads old G4 tower.

If I had one of those things...I would first max the RAM out, then format it and at least install 10.3.9.

Hell yeah.

If you end up getting it, be sure to run "software update".

It looks great. nice for websurfing. I ran the software update, it now has OS 10.3.9

Does anyone know a direction to point me in to enhance performance on the machine? via something like the control panel

it's not a laptop, it's an all in one jobber

I'm kind of disappointed, a lot of the sites my daughter goes to for games don't work on the mac. e.g. the disney site.

what version of os x? it may be worth the money to get 10.5 when it comes out cause as other's have already said, they run better. or 10.5 might be intel only. atleast get tiger.

did you try Firefox?

I'll install ff tonight, was using safari.

Does anyone know if I'd notice a difference by upgrading from 640mb to 1gb of memory?

Firefox isn't going to help. I wouldn't bother going to 1GB RAM unless you get a very sweet deal (memory is pretty cheap nowadays).
