mac -> sound system

My parents have a Mac as their main computer, and they want to attempt to hook that to a pair of speakers in a separate room, replacing a cd player / audio system with the mac (by burning all the cds to the computer and playing them from it onto the speakers).

Is it possible to do this? I know Apple makes some wireless thing that is supposed to serve that purpose, but it's quite expensive, and I would guess better alternatives exist. The computer has spare PCI slots, so I could stick a sound card in it if that's what is required, but if there's some device specifically designed for this purpose, that'd be much nicer.

The M-Audio soundcard I used to have had drivers for Mac. Probably their other cards do also.
What they could do:
PCI soundcard connected to amp with long RCA cables
USB soundcard (a better option probably)
Squeezebox (if the computer cannot be controlled from the room with the speakers, clearly the best option)
