Hey, slugg. Thanks for the comments. I'm getting excited about the possibilities of this new setup.

On my PC rig, I could have several instances of the Kompakt player open with each running it's on virtual instrument library; one for Symphonic Orchestra, one for RA, one with Stormdrum and maybe still have Stylus RMX open. Of course there was absolutely no way to have them all playing back at once, but it allowed for a very efficient work flow. That worked fine for doing orchestral type stuff. I also could not run all three stereo mics in Symphonic Orchestra; dropout city.

While make rock or metal music, I only really use Drumkit from Hell Superior as far as virtual instruments go. If you're familiar with the DFHS sampler, you'll know that the soundsets are huge. I was not able to compose with the room mics or mic bleeds enabled; my old rig would bog down, then drop out. Just dry mics on each drum piece. I don't expect to be able to utilize all of the mics and mic bleeding with the new box, but it'd be nice!

That was all done at 24/96, so this new system will be much better if I choose to stay with that sampling rate.

As for the RAM, I'll probably just buy 8GB to start with. That should be plenty. One nice thing about upgrading to the PLAY technology for Symphonic Orchestra is that I went ahead and upgraded to the PLAY Plus version. That'll include the entire library in 24-bit and 16-bit formats. You can then use the 16-bit for composing, then load the 24-bit soundset later for printing. So, as I said, 8GB should be fine, plus I'll have the 2GB that arrives with the system.

As for an audio interface, my old MAudio 1010 PCI card, with the rackmounted I/O, isn't compatible with the Mac Pro as the Mac doesn't have PCI slots, just PCIe slots. So, I've been rading reviews, forums and researching. I'm now pretty set on an Apogee Ensemble. It's supposed to fit like a glove with OSX and Logic 8.

The Ensemble is solid. If I ever see your rig, make sure you put some drool-resistant covers on your stuff. lol

The 16/24 bit format combo is freaking awesome. Be sure to post screenshots, pics, music samples... EVERYTHING! I needs me some geek pr0n.

But in terms of drum samplers... the closest thing I've used is Kontakt with Virtual Drumline 2.5. I write percussion scores for a high school, so that's my tool (with Sibelius). Other than that, I'm a die hard drummer myself, so I find it demoralizing to sequence a drum track. Too bad I don't have the money to record my own drums, LOL!

edit: oh right... if you can get your PC rig to run OS X, you're in for a treat. Logic automatically installs and is integrated with Qmaster, which basically sets up a cluster with other Macs to use their resources to perform Logic's tasks. It's one of the coolest things ever.

how can one get the drive rails to put in 2 x 750gb sata drives into a refurbished mac pro my gf just ordered?

also has anybody else used ram from transintl that one poster mentioned? we are looking to get her 2x4gb sticks to complement the 2x1gb sticks it comes with and want to make sure the vendor is reliable.

Also went ahead and bought Logic Studio through Apple as well. I could've saved around $20 or so by buying elsewhere, but I just dropped 3K on a Mac. What $20?!

Next will be some 3rd party RAM as well as an audio interface. I'm leaning towards the Apogee Ensemble, but a decent MAudio firewire interface would work, too.

Needless to say, I think the entire Apple forum here is extremely jealous now ;) Congrats man! And welcome to the club! :D

i just read somewhere that mac pros come with the sleds in place for each drive bay even without a drive in there.

AFAIK all Mac towers compatible with bare *ATA hard drives have never required additional purchased part(s). (SATA drives for G5 or later)

Consider that the sleds aren't offered at the Apple.com Store, which would make them a service part you couldn't buy at retail. Not considering any 3rd party clones, that would be a pain in the ass for Mac Pro buyers looking to add internal drives.

Apple uses a lot of tricks to maintain industry-leading margins, but proprietary Mac Pro sleds isn't one of them. It should be easy to confirm this in the manual or peeking inside the case.

thanks for that info Manly,

ill take a look at it when we get it or i might call apple tomorrow before i drop 50 bucks on a pair of hard drive sleds that is for sure.

we went with a refurbished mac pro quad core at 2.8ghz with 2x1gb of ram and one 320gb drive for $1999. comes with an ati 2600xt gc and a superdrive i think.

since she is only editing photos and not into any video editing, 4 cores is plenty - even with 100mb TIFF files out of 20megapixel camera backs :) i was tempted to get the dual quad core for only $400 more but since 400 bucks is a lot of money to us it really didnt make sense unless we did any video editing.

we will put in our own pair of seagate 750gb drives and not give apple our money.

also ordered a pair of 2x2gb sticks of ram from the emacsales store - since ps3 can only use 4gb i think, and she'll still have 2gb left for the OS and random stuff running in the background.

you know i almost ordered her 2x4gb sticks of memory until i ran into an article that adobe said this year they cannot offer cs4 in 64bit for apple due to apple abandoning a certain platform, therefore only PC would benefit from CS4 and be able to recognize and use over 4gb of ram for awhile until adobe develops with all fresh code.

i thought that was ironic. the mac myth is it is better for photo editing. and the creme de la creme of photo editing is soon to be better on a pc, definitively, for a decent amount of time.

The Mac Pros ship with all four drive carriers regardless of how many hard drives you have ordered.

For proof, read the next to the last sentence of the first paragraph in the 'Overview' section here.">http://store.apple.com/us/prod...A988G/A?mco=MTIxOTMxNQ</a>

Also, you can read about them here. Click the middle pic, 'Slide-in storage'.

EDIT: As for the extra RAM, I'm probable going with two, 4GB sticks from Crucial. That'll allow for the most future expansion.

Well, the G5 Powermac didn't really have much in the way of 'parts' for the drives. Just some screws with rubber/plastic rings on them and then you had to connect the SATA and Power lines to the drives directly. The new system on the Mac Pro, in addition to having 4 drives instead of 2 is also much more elegant.

Yeah, my Logic Studio bundle has already shipped. I should get it today. The Mac Pro will ship today through Friday. I'm in no real rush as I still haven't even ordered my audio interface...let alone learned how to even USE a mac! :D

EDIT: Just checked my email and the Mac Pro has shipped. I should get it on Monday. I also just ordered the Apogee Ensemble as well as Kontakt 3. Some of my soundsets (RA, Stormdrum, Hardcore Bass) need the full Kontakt vice the Kompakt player that was originally bundled with the sounds. The Kompakt player is not compatible with the newer Intel-based Macs.

Mighty Mouse? Get that off your list.

And yes, Apple Store does ship fast. China to U.S. is pretty quick these days. :p

I guess you missed the updates, but I ordered the system 3 days ago.

It's considered polite to offer an alternative when you criticize. What mouse would you suggest?

The Mighty Mouse is the worst consumer purchase I made in the past 2 years. It is just ergonomically and functionally flawed, and on top of that sucks batteries dry.

I'm using the Logitech V470 now, which is nothing special, but much better than the MM.

anything that is comfortable to you. I have a microsoft wireless laser 6000 =P (it was the only one that loosely matches the imac (white) at the time. Yes, I know, it's a stretch. That and I heard logitech's drivers were iffy, and refused to pay more than $40 for a wireless mouse.

Thanks for the reminder. I still have to order my RAM.

I received my Logic Studio package 2 days ago and my Kontakt 3 crossgrade yesterday. My Mac should arrive on Monday with the Apogee Ensemble on Tues or Weds.

So, I received the Mac pro today. I unboxed it and began messing around with the UI and learning how to navigate and use the applications. I've been updating it too. The keyboard is fine, but the Mighty Mouse is bad. It's too small and feels awkward. I may install my Apogee Ensemble or Logic Studio today if I feel confident enough. :)

fyi i took one of my gf's 2 750gb seagates from her dual enclosure and put it in the mac pro to format with their file system. it kept giving me errors. i did some googling and there was a setting you have to change to GUID - which it states is for all intel based macs and OS at 10.4 or higher i think right there on the mac pro. considering her mac shipped with what i think is 10.5 im suprised it isnt set by default.

I ended up installing the Apogee Ensemble. It was easy. I then downloaded a new update package for it which included new software as well as a firmware update. All went smoothly.

I'm up preparing for work and decided to begin the Logic Studio install. I should have waited until after work. There is one Logic Studio disc, six discs of content and a demo DVD. The installer is telling me it has 3 hours left. I'm leaving for work in about 20 minutes. Oops!
