Mac Powerbook External Monitor

I don't much about Macs. I have a Powerbook that was dropped and now the lcd doesn't work. I've attached an external monitor to the powerbook but can't see all of the screen.
Seems to still be in widescreen mode or something. Can't get to the control strip or anything. Just see the background picture. Any help out there?
Tried to s-video out too, same result.

Thanks

Is there any hotkeys on Macs you can press to change resolutions? I don't personally own a Mac so I can't help that much.

This is why Remote Desktop is enabled on my laptop, so I can get at it if it's LCD breaks for some reason.

Hmmm, what version of Mac OS are you running? When I attach an external VGA display to my PowerBook, it automatically resets the resolution to the optimal settings (in most cases, 1024x768). That's with both 10.2 (Jaguar) and 10.3 (Panther). If you can't reach the Dock to click the System Preferences icon, go to Macintosh HD -> Applications -> System Preferences. There's an applet for Display settings in that window.
