I have a Mac on my desktop, dual 1.25Ghz G4's and 512MB RAM with a Cinema LCD 22" I think. I just can't get into it. It used to belong to our graphics designer/webpage designer who recently left. Since we're not going to fill that position, I took the Mac to play with. My WinXP laptop feels faster and is easier to use. It's all what' you're used to, and I don't think I'll ever get into it.

I have emailed the guy that is selling the mac to see if he knows whether it is AGP or PCI. If it's PCI, I might reconsider and keep looking, but if it's AGP, I think I might get on it!

Jeff

Have fun with it..🙂

I have a G4/350 and I upped it to 1.2GHz and dropped a Radeon 9000 video card in it. 1GB of PC100.. I've been using that machine since 1999 or so. Lots of fun.

Hi,

Thanks for the !

If it was PCI, I too, would reconsider. Also, not all 400mhz G4's are capable of dual processing. If you want to find out if you can, check this out to see if your G4 AGP graphics is capable. Mine is capable of doing it. 🙂

Hope this helps.

Are you getting the OS as well, or are you buying that separately (e.g., your own copy)?

From the pics I have, there is an os preinstalled, but the pics aren't the best.. I can tell it's OSx and that's about it. I asked him if that was included and what version it was, so we will see...

Thanks for the link, thinlizzy... I will definately check it out. It says that program doesn't come in OSx, so if I can't get to classic/OS9, is there another way for me to tell if it will work? Duals wouldn't be a dealbreaker on this one, but it would be nice to keep my options open if I can!

Jeff

why? it won't do anything better than your PC and it will do a crapload of stuff worse. seriously, your P4 will absolutely CRUSH that G4 in photoshop. i mean i can't even begin to describe how much slower a 400 MHz G4 will be.

That is why he should get a Mac Mini.

Macs never CRASH. They don't get VIRUSES. The're over 2x faster than any PeeCees. They're EASY to use. It doesn't run WINDOZE although it can via emulation which is about as every bit as good as any PeeCee hardware. It holds it's resale VALUE. They have a very tight hardware/software integration creating a system that's free of INCOMPATIBILITY problems. The most ENTHUSIASTIC bunch of users. Once you Mac, you'll never go BACK.

As a mac fan, I say: don't waste your money on that obsolete machine. Even with the advantage per mhz that the mac has, that machine's not going to perform much better than a P3 600 or so. If you want an inexpensive machine to try out, get the mac mini.

Just got more info. That link I provided only applies if you are going to get a Sonnet dual processor upgrade card. If you are not getting one from Sonnet, you still have options, such as the Dual 1.7GHz G4 from Giga Designs. They also have Dual 1.5's which are compatible with all AGP Powermac G4's.
Giga Designs Dual 1.5GHz processor.

EDIT: Nevermind. The link I provided for the Gigadesigns processor is only a single.

Here is the Giga Designs product page, which contains many different Dual CPU's. Dual 1.7's are coming out sometime during this month. Giga Designs.

Ok, just got more info. You still need to find out if your AGP G4 is capable of running Dual CPU's. To do so if you are running OS X, follow this link. Download the utility, and run it. If it has OS 9, follow the instructions on how to find out on that same page.

If you are upgrading a PowerMac with G4 AGP Graphics you will need to determine if your system is dual compatible. You must have a uni-N revision of 7, or greater, for your system to utilize both processors. To determine your uni-N please follow the directions under the correct section below.

Mine is uni-N 7. 🙂

It might be OK to try out to see if you like macs but if you think going full fledge into a mac and ditching a PC, your an idiot. Seriously there is no point in doing it, you might want to haggle with the guy. Haggling never did any harm right? $250 is a ripoff and I would try going lower. You can get a 486 laptop on ebay for well above $100. I was out bid when I was trying to buy one, just doesn't make sense to pay so much for this machine. Laptops are worth more because of thier portability but this is a clunking thing. I don't know anyone on ebay who would buy that period for ANY price.

To everyone telling me to get the mini, I will just as soon as you tell me where my video card, extra hard drives, 3 or 4 sticks of RAM, and extra optical drives are going to go! Everyone saying that it's old and not going to do anything too well, I don't want something that is going to outrun my PC... If I did, I would be taking out a second mortgage on the house and getting a G5! I just want something to play on and see how much I like the system.

If you had read my other posts, I said it would be a hell of a lot easier for me to swing $250 than it would be to swing $500 right now, so unless one of you is going to step up and cover the difference for me, this is about getting this particular G4! If I had the money, don't you think I would have at least menitoned getting a mini in my OP?

Jeff

Are people suggesting Mini Mac because it's new and cute, or it's functional? Maybe people should read a fair comparison before they mindlessly recommend the minimal mac.
