Mac people can really hit a nerve sometimes...

In general terms, Mac's are better computers that PC's. Apple favours using
cutting edge technology, therefore Mac's are generally 12 months ahead of
PC's. However, you pay the price in getting that technology, thus most
people opted for the cheaper PC alternative (hence why there are less Mac's
out there).

May because there are less Mac's out there, Apple have made sure that you
can easily transfer files across platforms. For example I can easily read
PC formatted disks as if they had been formatted on my Mac at home. You
can't say that about PC's.

Most of the key software is available on both platforms, so as long as you
transfer files in a version of that software that the other person can read
(i.e. Word 98 verses Word 95), you rarely have any problems. If you run
Virtual PC on your Mac, you can use any Windows based software. In fact
because of the extra speed of the Macs, you can generally run windows
software at approximately the same speed as a PC, even though you are
running it under emulation. It can cause problems in that you need to run
two lots of anti-virus software!

Argghhh!! I couldn't hold back my response and sent it off to the entire list.

i used to have a performa, back when tv tuners where the shizzat.
all i want is a pc equivalent of virtual pc, cause the mac emu suck bigtime. i just want to play escape velocity, i loved that gmae!! gonna fire up the mac later today.

Yeah, that 733Mhz processor and one button mouse really clobber my PC. Let's see some more skewed Photoshop benchmarks Mr. Jobs.

As a mac user, I'll even say that message was FOS

I still love the 1 button mouse. Espescially the new clear one! 🙂

My 7 year old Mac is still modern day using Photoshop 6 with a G3 266 processor!

MAC Vs. PC
Ford Vs. Chevy

Put a famous rival here. What are zealots? They are the wetdreams of marketers. Why? Because they are brand loyal above and beyond the call of duty and will typically spend more per person than a non-zealot. Do I have data to support this? No. This is simply made from observations of people around me. Life is all about marketing. Am I biased? Well of course not! 😀

Its been stated and proven over and over that the mhz count is different with the different chipsets and copro's to the point where the numbers dont even relate to each other anymore.

as far as photoshop goes, ive used it on a mac, it runs great, but does crash on occasions. if it aint for you it aint for you. havent used a mac in at least 4 years, so i dont konw how the g4 feel (probobly even the g3's)

but all the companies that use em, i mean, they all cant be ignorant and wrong, IMO, quit trying to fight others battles, Knicks in 01.

I am sorry but I have to disagree about the extra speed of the macs while
running emmulation. It is still slower than today's PCs. Have you used a 1.2
GHZ AMD Athlon? I have used the emulation on the mac and it is ok. But no
where near has fast has it would be on a PC. Emulatio will always be slower
than running it on a native platform. Has for Technology, unless I am
mistaken, the MAC has been adopting more and more PC based Technology. PCI
bus, USB, and IDE. Firewire can be found on PCs or addd has a add in card,
both system have SCSI, so what new about the technology on the mac?

FYI, some of the technologies Apple implimented recently and first:

1. Firewire

2. DVD-RAM

3. Floppy diskless system (great idea)

4. Boot CDs

5. Frontside Cache

6. ADC (Apple Display Connector) hasn't caught on, but it's really cool.

All of you who bash the macs are just as bad as the Mac zealots who bash PCs.

"...Apple favours using cutting edge technology..."

I had to do a double take. At first I read it as: "Apple flavours using cutting edge technology..."

Yeah I really hate those cheap and easy to use floppy disks that let me carry around my term paper and stuff *eye roll*

Boot CD's? I just booted my P75 linux router from a cd thats pretty old......

Even though Apple invented Firewire and submitted the spec to IEEE, it never implemented the technology until the G4 arrived. Sony has been shipping with Firewire for quite some time now (dubbed iLink by Sony).

Apple has actually done some good things for the computer world. They pushed USB to the forefront of the market when Microsoft was unwilling to do so. Macs have been using SCSI for eons and had been using DIMMs in the Power Macs since the 601 (PowerMac 7200, etc.) series while PCs were still at 72pin FPM SIMMs. Macs have been shipping with ethernet on board for years now. The same can be said of video, though Control/Chaos was a really crappy video chipset. Macs are also MUCH better with installation of new hardware. You simply have to put in the device, load the extension (if applicable) and it works. Macs have had excellent cases for a long time as well. The Outrigger case on the 7200, 7500, 7600 and one of the Gossamer G3 lines was incredibly easy to open up and do work on. PCs have been attempting to catch up to this in the past few years and are doing okay in their attempt. Also, the sheer amount of PCI slots and memory slots on Macs has been amazing. The 9500 (old school) shipped with 6 PCI slots and something like 12 DIMM slots (wow!).

Another cool thing about Macs is that they can last for years. I can take my old 8500 and put a G3 400mhz CPU on it and it will run like a dream (well, as good as any Mac can run). This is like taking an old 430TX based motherboard and trying to put a P3 on it.

As for bootable CDs, I believe that Microsoft had implemented that since the NT 3.51 days. For some reason, Microsoft does not make 9x bootable - which surprises me a bit.

firewire has only recently been added to macs, even though apple invented it. i think sony was the first people to use it widely.

and what is frontside cache? are you talking about the on motherboard stuff? or do you mean backside cache? which was present in the pentium pro since late '95, well before the ibm ppc 750 was out. which also means that 7 year old didn't come with a g3. 7 years... i was in... 10th grade... those were all ppc 601 chips back then the original powermacs. i know because my CS teacher went nuts about them and bought a lab full of them and we had to use metrowerks.

> 1. Firewire

Locked in as a Apple only solution for a while, as the rest of the
industry did not want to pay licensing fees for an already more expensive
serial bus. Now coming into its own as a participant alongside USB, and
highly rated for use in Video transfer.

> 2. DVD-RAM

A technology that half the DVD consortium is still competing against.

(Being the first with a DVD-R in the new Macs is a much cooler idea)

> 3. Floppy diskless system (great idea)

That first showed up in NeXT boxen (back in the late 1980's?) -
A Jobs idea that was ahead of its time, but not an Apple first.

> 4. Boot CDs

I recall Sparcs that could boot from a CD in the early 90's. How long
has that feature been on Macs?

What is more cool to me was the motorized eject feature of the Mac floppy drives.

> 5. Frontside Cache

If they came out with this idea first, then it was indeed cool...

6. ADC (Apple Display Connector) hasn't caught on, but it's really cool.

I had to look this one up real quick, and yes its a cool design. I could
think of a couple gotchas from the PC point of view towards different
type of connectors. But this would be compatible with most users needs.
Question is, has Apple even tried to get this out beyond their own designs?

cutting edge technology as in the geforce2 mx is the video card in their top of the line pc? LOL
i think that is pretty self explanatory..

btw- my first computer was a quadra 605 with a 2400 baud modem and aol. goddamn i was |337

Hmmm...that's odd considering my B&W G3 has firewire...

I'm not arguing that Apple is ahead of Unix designs. 🙂 My Sparcstation 4 has boot CDs

I think IBM/Motorola were the first to have a frontside cache (think I'm using the correct word), but it was in Apple's computers first.

As for floppy discs, Unix boxes have been without them forever...but it's a first for the PC field.

Edit: gUEv- I did read an article about the new G4+ chip where the author asks why the high-end of the macs uses the celeron of the graphics board world. You can still get a DDR Radeon!

i love ignorant pc ppl who give up on a computer because it says mac.

*kat. <-- wishes she had a mac (mmm...the cube)
