1. I have an iMac Rev C running OS 8.6 and a PC running WinME. i have them connected to a hub sharing a cable modem. i would like share a printer and mp3 folder that are connected to the PC. any help would be very helpful, even if its telling me that i can't do it.

**Update on question**

So i've tried using DAVE to share files. but it can't see my PC, and there are no instructions on how to use it. anyone who could help here would be welcome. I have also tried setting up an FTP server on my PC and running fetch on my Mac, the problem is that it uses the cable modem to send instead of connecting throught he hub. so basically its not even using the LAN, i'm getting 16k sends on a 10mbs LAN. anyone have any ideas? or if you need some clarificaion don't hesitate to PM or email me (jvinder@home.com).

thx in advance.

I believe that if the mp3 files are on the pc, you should be able to access them from the mac. Don't think you can access a mac volume from a pc natively, may be able to with some sort of specialized software. You will probably have to get a print server to print from both.

I'm pretty sure you can backup Mac CD's on your PC using software like cloneCD or cdrwin. There's a thread about networking Mac's and PC's over in networking. link

A few mac/pc comments:

You might want to give a proggy called "Dave" a try (on your mac) for seamless interoperation (file sharing, printer sharing, etc). I've tried a trail ver. of it @ work and it worked great.

A mac can copy PC CD's even if it can't read them, a PC can do the same. If you burn a CD in ISO 9660 format (no Joliet filenames), the CD will read fine on either platform.

At work, I use TCP/IP protocols for file sharing (FTP, HTTP), no extra software to buy and transfers are clean (well, sometimes have to re-add resource forks to mac files). No software to buy, works great.

Good luck with OS X...I'm gonna hold off for quite a while. But if they have a version of SAMBA for it, that might solve ALL your issues immediately.

i don't know if winME has this or not, but in win2k you can install the appletalk protocol for use with your ethernet card over a network. i've used this to share files between macs and pc's over a lan.

Well, let's start with the easy questions first.

On the PC:

- Do you have file and printer sharing enabled on the Windows machine?

- Do you have the folder on the Windows machine set to share?

On the Mac:

- Do you have AppleTalk set to use Ethernet?

- Have you set up NetBIOS? (part of DAVE setup).

Setting up DAVE is pretty easy - I haven't done it in a while, but I seem to recall extensive documentation came with the program, and there was other help available at the DAVE web site.

Note that the Mac can only use printers that have Mac drivers or are Postscript-aware.

Connectix makes a product called Double Talk that enables a Mac to see a PC (but not vice-versa) that might work for you. I however, like to use the demo of PC MacLAN from Miramar. The demo is a time limit deal, but for occasional use it works great. Good luck.
