Mac OSX Tiger on Intel

Why not? Would be interesting to see a powerful OS in action?

Honestly, I am just waiting to get a dual-boot mac. I like their design, but I am too much accustomed to Windows

Don't get your hopes up. Apple will no doubt do everything within its power to avoid the ability for users to dual boot with Windows.

SEARCH. This has been asked plenty of times already.

And yes, some people have. Contact apple for a development machine.

Honestly, I'd probably be all over one if it didn't already require an expensive developer membership.

Not on Apple's own hardware, so they said at the WWDC. They will not support Windows either, though.

Yeah imagine the tech support nightmare if Apple offered support for dual-booting Windoze and OSX. 😀

Personally I expect that in a few months Tiger will be cracked and running on vanilla x86 boxes, one way or another.

If I recall, I heard them saying that people could install Windows, too. I, however, am waiting for a cracked version for use on my system.

I wouldn't coun't on that. If there are no drivers for your motherboard, NIC, sound, etc, it kinda defeats the purpose of installing it.

Yes.

Plus they are probably going to use hardware DRM to enforce it. Basicly it would cost way more to steal it then to buy it.

Although you'd be a moron to steal it anyways.

They said they won't do anything to stop people from installing Windows on Apple/Intel hardware, but I doubt they'll support anything but Mac software.

How exactly would they DRM it? The problem is, while they could use a trusted computing scheme on their own hardware, commodity machines which don't support that type of trusted computing (probably Intel's LaGrand?) would be able to run modified binaries.

The main difficulty is....

Apple Uses a 2 Part OS 1 Part Software.. 1 Part part Hardware in the form of hard ROM chips built into the comupter.. With out the chips the Software is No Good.

IIRC, that's only a problem with the original Mac OS (9 and lower). They required a ROM to handle the user interface. OS X doesn't rely on the ROM to do anything now.

thinksecret has a story running this morning (with a few photos) of the Intel Mac developer machines they are "leasing".

They tried to install OSX on a Dell machine and it failed. But they're also reporting that apple is using some sort of EDID chip on the motherboard to authenticate with OSX before installation. Sort of a hardware dongle approach. Shouldn't be long before that is cracked wide open...

It doesn't require a ROM because you couldn't get compatible hardware from any other vendor's, now that you'll be able to I'm sure they'll add some sort of hardware ID verification.

A crack version of what? OS X has been compiled for "intel" for five years. IMO, it is not the software that has to be hacked, it is the HARDWARE....

Probably not. It'll be a lot easier to break the software, like they did with XP's activation.

if apple uses home-brewed motherboards, it won't be really 'possible'.

I.E. - IBM and Motorola both had readily-available north/south bridges available for Apple to use, but Apple decided to make their own.

I see Apple as making some custom Intel chipsets along w/ Intel.

You would be able to Install OS X on any of these chipsets, though. Currently, OS X has no 'CD-key', but I don't think apple really cares, as ALL the hardware it runs on must come through them.
