MAC OSX - Odd little things happening

Hi,

I've not been using OSX for long and I need to know how to get things how they were when I first started to use my Macbook. Straight to the point :

1- When I'm at work, my Airport does not connect automatically anymore. I have 2 hotspots near. #1 is secured and in my preferred networks. #2 is unsecured and I never use it. I want my Mac to connect to #1 automatically. But it does not do it anymore. I guess this started happening when we lost the feed on the cable for a day. I tried to use connection #1. I could connect fine (the router was fine) but could not navigate (because the cable feed was cut). I tried connecting to the #2 connection and i didn't work either (same cable basically). How can I revert it the way it was? (For the record, I have only one hotspot at home and it connects fine, at least, I'll try at home tonight.)

2- My keypad keep forgetting I want to double-tap to do a right click. When I go into the prefs, the box is checked, but I need to uncheck it and recheck it to get my trackpad to right click again. I think this may have to do with my bluethoot mouse but it never did that with it before. An hints on that?

Thanks everyone!

I use the double tap on all windows laptops, I don't use it on OS X because I find it sucks.
To get your airport thing sorted out to go network prefs and make sure you have "connect automatically" turned on. That failing, create a "new location" for your connection, set it up how you need it and then you can choose it from the location submenu under the apple. As long as that new connection is selected it should "just work".
Seriously though about the double tap, it's gonna drive you nuts whether it works or not, for some reason OS X just isn't geared towards the double tap. I use CTRL when not using a mouse and it's not bad at all.
I think the first thing you should try to do is convince yourself that you're not using windows anymore, so stop trying to use the mac like you would use windows. It takes a while, but they need to be 'driven' differently to get the full benefits of either, they are two different animals. Learn to do things the mac way.

*disclaimer* I have used Windows longer than I have used OS X and continue to use Windows on a regular basis. I have been using OS X and loving it since it first came out. Different tools, different jobs IMO.

Hmm I didn't even know you can configure OS X to ctrl-click for double taps, where's this setting hidden anyway?

However if the double tap problem only surfaces in a Boot Camp installation of Windows, you might want to update to version 1.1.2 (Link).

Dude, where did that come up? I'm not trying to edit the "OSX registry" here or find the "OSX System32" folder, I want my things to "just work" like a Mac should be! 😛 I don't think I ever mentionned something about OSX being not like Windows...

I'll try to set a new location, which I already did first thing when I got the laptop but will try again. It is indeed set to connect automatically, exactly why I'm here asking this question. And the double tap works like a charm here and I can't live without it. And Ctrl-Tapping is exactly what I don't want to use because I don't want to have to touch the keyboard when I'm just lazily reading the web with my right hand and drinking a beer with my left one. It should "just word" because the setting is there and it's checked.

Anyway, thanks for taking time to answer my questions (even if it was a little overboard. 😉)

And for the record, the "I've not been using OSX for long" part means I used OSX for the past 4 months. A long time means at least a year in my book.

My mistake.
For some reason I read "double tap" as "right click", don't mind me.
I stand by my comments though otherwise and yes, I've been using OS X and macs for a long time, like since the Macintosh SE and on the PC side, since DOS. I use them differently.
I regret that you took my comments as condescending, I was trying to be helpful.

Also, some things on the mac don't "just work" which I stay away from the trackpad as a clicker, Apple screwed that one up IMO.
On the windows side of things I wouldn't be able to live without it.

And you were helpful! 😀 I was not really offended, just a bit surprised. No hard feeling mate.

I've seen a lot of little things that can't really be fixed in Mac OSX. What I think is a problem is not really the little quirks, it's the way people seem to think that because it's OSX, it's the Mac way and everybody should just gobble up and shut up. I.E.: You can resize a window only in the bottom right corner. It's not a PROBLEM, it's a little quirk and I would like it to be fixed. I don't want to have to go in the bottom corner to resize a window, I should be able to resize from any part of the border. But because it's in OSX, people accept it as an excellent design decision. The fact that this feature does not meet my NEEDS is not important to them. I should just shut up and accept it as "the way to go" on Mac. This is the most irritating part of the Mac experience thus far.

Still, I don't think I'm really on topic... 😉
