Virtual desktops rock ;)

I dont follow gcc either, but from what Ive read PPC support has always been kinda behind. So hopefully Apple is helping the gcc people bring things up to speed.

<< speaking of gcc, how come no one uses 3.0? >>

3.0 was a development release I think.

<< thanks n0c. youre one of the few fellow apple users here with me. :) >>

There was another Mac user asking for a Mac forum in Forum Issues a while back. I mentioned that I would bring up some more Mac topics when there were good ones. I thought this was worthwhile. The rumors of a new TiBook coming out soon wasnt quite good enough. Plus I had to clean up the drool :p

<< btw, n0c, check out a program called "launchbar" for OS X. its awesome. >>

I think Ive seen it and didnt think much of it at the time. If I get a chance Ill download it though.

Adium and Fire are another 2 great programs for Mac OS X.

Less clutter. I like to spread out applications between desktops so I dont have to minimize anything.

EDIT: And its not a stupid question. In Windows you are limited to one desktop, you just havent experienced the thrill of a better interface :p

yeah, instead of getting lost in a sea of cluttered, overlapping windows, you have (in my case) workspace 1, with a browser maximized, workspace 2, an irc window and a bunch of terminals, then desktop 3 and 4 are reserved for things like gvim and the gimp.

once you get used to it, going back to a single workspace is a HORRIBLE experience :p (i was in windows not too long ago, constantly hitting CTRL-right to check on irc, but nothing would happen and i would feel dumb :p)

Hmm, could you provide a screenshot of how it works in OSX?

Im trying the XP version that comes with powertoys.. and Im likeing it so far.. but it seems weird.. everything in the start menu is the same.. I guess thats normal? The only thing that chages when I switch between the desktops is the current maximized window.. I could simply click the application I would want to be in.. and a second later, it would be maximized..

I just have a feeling that maybe the XP version isnt as powerful?

I dont have it installed yet, that has to wait till I get home and have the time and motivation ;)

Basically each desktop should have different applications listed in the task bar. That is how it normally works for me in XFree86. So instead of having 1 taskbar, you would have 2+ (one for each desktop) with different applications in it (whatever you happen to be running on that desktop).

Ahh I see.. Thats what I was expecting.. but thats not the way that XP Powertoys Virtual Desktop Manager handles it. The same taskbar remains between Virtual Desktops.. sort of eliminating its value. Perhaps I have it configured improperly.

well the taskbar should be the same, the only thing that really changes are the windows. thus, the little entries in the main taskbar area will be different for each desktop. the stuff in the start menu will be the same and all that, its basically just room for more windows.

No.. What I meant was, the programs remain the same. So for example, I could have 5 applications running and listed on the taskbar, And I would have one application, say photoshop maximized on 'Desktop1'. Then when I switched to 'Desktop2', the buttons on the taskbar would remain the same.. all the same programs listed.. the only difference is, photoshop is minimized, and I can have a different application maxmimzed.
So there would be no real point to the virtual desktops then. Since all it does differently is have multiple progams 'maximized'

But I figured it out now, I did have it configured improperly. The correct way was to go to right click on the MSDVM applet and uncheck 'Shared Desktops'

Now it seems to be working properly. I have three different applications running on desktop one.. and three other applications running on desktop two. The applications are different in the taskbar now.

no, the icons or whatever the heck they are called in windows (they dont even have a name do they ?!?!?) DO change. they, and the windows themselves change. everything else stays the same.

According to the rumors there should be a slightly faster TiBook coming out on the 30th. Check macrumors.com or whatever those sites are for more information. Id expect an update by MacWorld NY though.

Macrumors.com forum link. Sorry for linking another forum, but that was the most direct link I could give. I think it mentions both the updated video and the bump in mhz.

It looks like they have the rumor on their main page now -- http://www.macosrumors.com

Well, I asked my boss to hold off on the TiBook order until next week. We will see if they actually speed bump them. They probably won't, but don't you just hate it when you order something and by the time it is delivered there is already something better?!?

Well, he has to order it now... :( Hopefully the speed bump won't happen too soon!

Oh well, I am going to get a 667MHz, 15.2" LCD, 512MB RAM, 48GB hard drive, a superdrive, and an extra battery & AC adaptor, so I really can't complain too much. :)
