Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) problems

Wondering if anybody has constructive feedback on these two issues I've ran into recently.

1. Font-smoothing on a new 17" LCD (1280x1024) looks pretty ragged. DVI connection to a Mac mini. Haven't tried VGA, but why would I? Granted, Windows XP ClearType does not look awesome either, but Mac OS X is clearly worse (regardless of font-smoothing settings). Although usable, for the time being I've relegated the LCD to Windows PC use only.

2. Is the SMB client code (still) causing people grief? Connected to a Windows workgroup share earlier to dump a large number of files (from a connected DMP). A large majority of files ended up being 0 byte or 2KB, and the vast majority were corrupt. There are no firewalls on either machine (that I recall).

On point 1: In the system settings I disabled font smoothing for 12pt and lower. You can get rid of smoothed fonts (partly at least) with TinkerTool. I tried it but in the end I decided to stay with this feature (My problem was that the grey pixels looked differently on my iBook, depending on my view angle, but I don't notice it anymore).

on point 2, I connected to someones computer runnin xp and transfered about 8 gigs worth of files through the workgroup and it worked fine without a hitch.

On point 2: install SAMBA from the Fink repository. It helps sometimes if you are having problems with Windows shares. To configure it you can of course edit the smb.conf by hand but best is to download the most excellent "Sharepoints" GUI (recommended even if you don't want to fink the samba). Another alternative to Sharepoints is to get Sambas own http based manager SWAT to work - google around for it.

I really wouldn't recommend using the version of Samba from fink, as you'll have to set it up and you don't know what kind of inconsistencies it may bring. The built in samba server works perfectly fine, but you might look into that Sharepoints thing, I haven't looked at that.
