I was wondering how to test if a network card was working in an iMac? Is there some kind of device manager or some sort of a prompt where I can ping the network card? I am running MAC OS 9.03

Any help on steps to try would be appreciated as I am trying to connect this iMac to an ethernet with a DHCP server and the every time I change TCP/ IP settings the following configuration is always the same:

IP Address: 169.254.10.183
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Router Address: 169.254.10.183

Help would be truly appreciated.
 
It looks like it cant find the DHCP server. If this is a home network try switching to static ips. Unless you have a large number of IPs DHCP is less than worthless. Anyhow, I dont think there are any built in ping utilities in Mac OS < 10. Try updating your software too.
 
This is in a corporate setting and unfortunately it seems as though lightning strikes may have damaged the ethernet port, although I'd like to be able to say for sure that the problem is with the port rather than trying to guess. I've tested the cables, and I know the DHCP server is working since PCs are successfully able to retrieve IP addresses. How does one normally renew/ release an IP address in MAC?

Check the control applet thingies (I dont use Mac OS < X much).

rebooting the machine automatically does this in Mac OS.
 
Does anyone have some kind of shareware tool to test the Network port on a Mac? Anything at this point would help as I've exhausted all other possibiilties.

 

can you see any AppleTalk zones/shares/printers?

put a ping/tracroute program onto the machine and then try to ping the closest router/gateway/switch by IP (if you get the closest you shouldn't need a detailed routing table)
