has to be you got a blue and white, a bigger faster HD is you best upgrade, it has 4 ram slots its not picky about ram, if your lucky most 300's were made by IBM and are way under rated if its an IBM you'll likely get it to 400mhz no prob. OS X is great I would go for 384M of ram with it sounds like you have it. you may be better poking around @ xlr8yourmac.com than asking for info here, a lot of misinformation has been posted above. be carefull if you get a rev1 motherboard they can have HD corruption issues with some drives.
video card upgrade is not worth the cash unless you get one cheap (used or flash a 7000) and it really only will help out with games not the OS or 2d stuff quartz extreme can be made to work on PCI cards (radeon class) but I dont think its worth it(been there done it)

Please point out the misinformation above.

Yes definitely upgrade! OS 9 is like what windows me is to windows xp (except better because it's a mac) OS 9 gives mac's a bad name.

Ugh! ME is the only version of Windows that is not allowed to touch ANY of my machines in my shop... I hate the damn thing! It was just a kludge of random things MS had been working on for XP slapped on top of 98, because home users were whining that Business users got Win2k.

I think I will play with OS9 a little when I get the machine (it is pre-installed), then move up to OSX, so I can appreciate the difference!

go with OS X, you'll definitely want to invest in more RAM though

Yeah, I have 4 sticks of 128 MB PC100 RAM, and after some research, I found out that the B&W G3's are more tolerant of generic RAM than other Macs. I will be filling up the slots as much as I can.

I also got a set of OS X 10.3 Panther Retail Install Disks (new) from a seller on Ebay for $30.00, so I am set to go as soon as the machine gets here (It is shipped slow, cause I am cheap😉). so I will try out OS 9 for a little bit, then through on a clean install of Panther.

Cool! I actually still use OS 9. My 400mhz Powermac G4 dual boots with OS 9 and 10.3 Panther. I have a SCSI chain that consists of an external burner, external cd rom, and a UMAX SCSI scanner. The chain only works under OS 9, so I kept OS 9. Some people call me crazy, but I actually enjoy using OS 9. It doesnt crash on me a lot, but when it does, I get a little frustrated. Thats what I hate about it. But other than that, I think its a good OS.

Panther is a sweet OS though. It actually runs very smooth on my G4. I expect the same with your G3. 🙂
