Mac OS 10.2

Well, Mac World New York started today. OS 10.2 looks pretty good, but you gotta buy it! ARGH! I guess it's not that bad since it's been out for a while now. It's better than Microsoft coming out with a new OS every year. Still, even with my 50% student discount, I'm reluctant to get it.

I watched the whole keynote speach. 10.2 looks like a much needed improvement. OSX has always looked really nice to me, but the speed problems that I heard about made me weary. OSX now looks like it could outperform my Windows box. Searching was especially zippy. It seemed almost as fast as searches straight from the commmand line in linux. Of course I know that they're probably running a dual 1GHz or faster. All of this is great since I'm planning to buy a Mac at the end of the summer. The iMac looks especially tempting with the 17" display. It kind of sucks that iTools (now .Mac) is turning into a pay to use service. I was hoping they would unveil a G4 iBook, but I guess I can't have everything. This Macworld wasn't quite as interesting as others, but at least it looks like Apple is actually moving forward.

<Edit> Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. It seems like the iMacs 17" display is running at a crazily high resolution. 1440 x 900 is a little high for a 17" display for me. It seems like 1280x800 would be a little easier on the eyes while still keeping plenty of desktop realestate.

We knew there would be no g4 iBook (which sucks). New PowerMacs should be out near the fall 🙂D). New TiBooks around then or a little later 🙂(). Maybe new cases then... No g5 🙂(), but maybe, just maybe the new g4 with DDR support 😀

no offense.... but isn't collecting every version stupid? what would you say to someone who bought win 3.1, 3.11, WFW, 95a, 95b, 95c, 98, 98se, ME, NT 3.51, nt4, 2k and XP?

not that having the latest version is necessarily a bad thing 😉
edit: or maybe it is more like buying every windowsudate patch on CD

Yeah, its dumb. But I didnt feel like waiting for 2 weeks or whatever for a free 10.1. 10.2 is a necessary buy, so Ill be purchasing it. The collection thing was a joke... Kinda. Beats pirating it... Maybe.

Yeah, it is suck! I just got myself a @mac.com account a few days ago! Well, I hope they still offer a free e-mail only .Mac. New 10GB iPod is cool because it's the lightest among the others and it bundles case and remote control, OS X 10.2 is great, iSync is awesome but all these stuffs is useless for me without a G4 iBook! Yeah, if they release G4 iBook this Christmas, I will be really tempted to switch. Even Apple admits that Quartz Extreme doesn't offer big improvements on G3 processor.

Do you get a free upgrade to 10.2 if you have 10.1? $129 sounds like a lot money for what sounds like a small upgrade. I suppose M$ does the same thing too like they did with Win ME. I'm not a Mac user but I'm just curious since I am seriously considering buying a used Mac to check out. Thanks.

I wish apple had called the damn thing OS XI so that people wouldnt bitch and moan about it.

Whats with the world today? It was a much classier move to release it as 10.2 instead of going to Microshaft route and rebranding the entire thing. What did Win98 give that Win95 didnt already have?

Ill be getting a copy, for my Powerbook G3/266.

I have 6 software upgrade coupons that are useless. Ill trade them all for a reasonable discount.

IMO, 1440x900 would be perfect. But then again, I like my 12" 1024x768 display on my iBook. I do agree though that those 15" Dell laptops at 1600x1200 is too much.

Apple is lagging w/ the hardware IMO .. sure they got the new dual powermacs out .. but they lagging with those i-books. I'm very dissapointed that they won't be coming out with a G4 i-book, that's a shame. What is quartz extreme again? I though that the big deal with 10.2 would be hardware graphics acceleration support .. or openGL or something? Am I wrong? 129 USD is a lot of money .. damn 🙁
Well, whatefver the mac is a rich man's toy anyways 🙁
I still have to get an i-book so I can play, but I can't afford one and if I could chances are I wouldn't have money left over for OSX 10.2
