Does anyone know if they sell Mac motherboards and CPUs? Is it there place that sells Mac components, so that a person could build a Mac?

Thanks,
-earle.

Not quite true.

You can get motherboards for older Macs (say, pre-G3) and actually put together a system out of components.

With newer systems--certainlly anything with a G4--it's a different story, but it's still not quite as closed as you might think it is.

Oh and a word of advice, Mac's usually refer to motherboards as Logic boards, if you start looking. You can find some parts and stuff on eb@y, but it seems to me that buying it whole you be cheaper a lot of times than the parts, and also remember that things like power connectors and even slot layout are not standardized, so often there is little you can replace cross-generations, or at least without a decent amount of tweaking/adaptors.

If you do find anything though, let me know...I would love to get a hold of a g3 era mac to play with, but the prices are a little more than my budget right now.

There are all sorts up upgrades you can do with a Mac. It just depends on the model. I have to say though, they really pack things in. To upgrade mine, I had to switch power supplies, and that was the piece under everything else. To answer your question, you can buy logicbaords & other upgrade parts here, and here.

Quoting myself from another thread:

<< Modern Mac's(the G3/G4 models)use the same memory, keyboards, mice, hard drives, CD-ROM's, CD-RW's and DVD drives as PC's so those parts will be very easy to come buy. Mac video cards are easy to get, every online Mac shop sells them. The cool ass G3/G4 cases can be found on ebay along with the motherboards(or logic boards as Apple calls them)but be warned G4 motherboards don't come cheap. If you build a G3 based system the processors will be easy to find, just go to any online Mac store and get a "G3 upgrade". If your want to build a G4 system AllMac and Shaye Computers are the only stores that I know off that sell 500mhz+ G4 modules. >>

You can get EVERY part from Apple. All you have to do is get an Apple authorized tech or dealer to Apple Order you whatever you need.

Forget ordering from Apple unless you have more $$$ than you know what to do with. Talk about expensive!!! For some reason $70 for a 1.44MB floppy sounds a little pricy for me.
