Mac data recovery tools?

I have a friend whose Mac hd is having problems (seems to have corrupted its file allocation table or w/e that's called in the macworld). Are there any software tools (free or not) that may be able to help? Is there any way to read a Mac hd on a PC (perhaps through a linux distro?)

Thanks

You can use a Linux live CD like Knoppix and pull off files if they haven't been corrupted. I've also heard one of the OS X installation discs has a recovery program on CD, but I've never used it nor know its name.
