MAC Address Changes Itself

Here is a strange one.

I have a dell server that we rebooted this week.

It has a Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Controller built in.

After the reboot the last character in the MAC Address changed from a B to a C

Can't find anything on this...does anyone have a clue?

Thanks.

Neat trick! 😕

I wish it were just a trick...

I believe he was pointing out that a MAC address is much longer than just one character...so your B to C makes no sense at all

The original post said the LAST character changed from a B to a C...the rest remained the same.

All I can say is wow. How are you 100% sure that you didn't record the old one wrong or fatfingered it at some point?

oh I missed that...that would be very odd....

I don't know boo (that's a Halloween term) about MAC addresses, but a quick search seemed to show that each adapter has TWO MAC addresses:

1) One that's burned into the NIC hardware
2) A second that's USUALLY the same as the hardware one, but is changeable via software.

Is it possible that the "software" MAC address somehow got changed, and that's the one you are reading?
